Is this a good idea?

Okay, so I basically feel as if I am getting nowhere with my study.  Exams are in just over a month, and I need to pull my finger out because I am aiming high.

I have Wednesday's and Friday's off from school each week, which initially seemed great.  Lots of time to study.  But I just constantly find myself sleeping in, procrastinating, getting distracted by the TV and computer and consequently getting far less done than what I actually should.

I can't study with friends.  At school, we either just talk all the time, or I find myself wasting time helping them out.

My dad works in the city everyday, and I'm considering waking up early each Wed and Fri and going with him.  He can drop me off at the State Library, where I know I'll actually get study done in the silent study area.  This is like the only place I know I'll get work done.

Any other techniques people have found to study at home and not get distracted?  I live in a pretty small unit, and I only have a small desk to study on, and it often gets rather noisy in the house.

Thoughts much appreciated. :)

Can't help you there :( I'm the Queen of procrastination! My house is always noisy as well, and I can't block it out (and I don't like listening to music while I work as it distracts me XD) But the state library sounds like a good idea! You should go for it :P

Yeah go to the state library or a university library. They usually have quiet "shut the fuck up and study" areas where you have nothing else to do but read.

Too much time and focusing only on study is counterproductive; it's not really possible to work at 100% intensity for more than 2-3 hours at a time so don't try to study for the whole day. My policy is not to work at all if I'm not able to put 100% focus in.

I agree that there is no point studying if you're not focusing 100%, but this is not the problem.  Once I start, I am okay.  I can also go long periods and still take in lots of info.  It's just that I keep getting distracted.

This won't happen if I'm in silence, and have absolutely nothing else to do.  I'd obviously have a break and go get lunch or whatever.  Plus I have tutoring on Wednesdays in the middle of the day, which at the moment causes Wednesday's to be a waste, because it's in the middle of the day, and I don't even bother to start studying until I get home afterwards.

I'm definitely going to try it, because something has to change, and quick.

Hahaha, that would mean no study for me at all! :p

As for your question, stonecold, I'd say try and find a mental motivation for studying. This might seem trite, and even futile, but it definitely works for me. Try and mentally picture the closeness of the exams and get some pressure into you. For me this helps to start the studying (and reduce the time spent procrastinating before it). I find that once you start studying, you'll be off, and, really, before you know it, you've already done 3 hours of studying.

Hope this helps. :p

Same, I just look for distractions everywhere. Glad that I'm only in year 10. :)

You could try setting incentives. If you have a whole day off you have plenty of time to chill as well as study, so to get yourself started you could promise yourself that if and only if you get x amount of work done, then you'll watch a movie or hit the gym or whatever floats your boat.
