Accounting Cadetships

Does anyone have one?
What's it like, what sorts of tasks do you do?
Is it worth it, working full time for relatively low pay (I think its low pay?)
How much is that pay exactly and do they pay for your university degree aswell?
Are you allowed to do a double major in commerce or just accounting?
WHat is the main motivation for wanting a cadetship - is it just future opportunities?
What is the difference between a cadetship at one of the Big 4 firms and a mid-tier firm (this question is very important to me haha)

Sorry for all of these questions haha. As you can tell I'm obviously thinking a lot about this ;)
Doesn't matter if you're not in a cadetship, if you know something, any information would help!

cheers :)

I don't but my two cousins had cadetships at PWC and KPMG.

Supposedly it's pretty boring work to start off with. You basically start off being a filer and making coffee etc. however as you progress through your degree you get promoted to more interesting tasks.

Is it worth it, working full time for relatively low pay (I think its low pay?)
Hmmm, I'm not too positive about this. My cousins have said that it tends to mean you sacrifice your social life. You're attending uni only part-time and don't really have time to go to the social events of the uni. Holidays are also taken up by full-time work. You tend to hang out with older people at work rather than meet younger people at uni. They actually recommended me not to apply for the cadetships because they believed it's important to make the most of your uni degree and that there is plenty of time to start full-time work later.
However, my cousins are only in their mid-20s and they are already very successful so that is certainly an upside in the fact you are promoted younger.

How much is that pay exactly and do they pay for your university degree aswell?
I'm not too sure of the pay but I don't think they pay for your uni degree. However, I think they give you money to buy textbooks.
Are you allowed to do a double major in commerce or just accounting?
My two cousins only studied straight accounting, I'm not to sure if you can study a double.

What is the main motivation for wanting a cadetship - is it just future opportunities?
Mainly future opportunities because you already have a foot in the door at a young age, being promoted younger.

What is the difference between a cadetship at one of the Big 4 firms and a mid-tier firm (this question is very important to me haha)
Sorry can't help you with this one.

Best of Luck for the year. Hope this helps with your decision :)

I was rejected first round when I applied, but I was talked out of doing a cadetship by a high-end Big 4 businessman anyway (I won't say which firm).
He said that the cadets just get all the grunt work, and he impressed upon me how much more beneficial it would be to go to uni and consider doing summer internships instead.

From my school website:
Quote
KPMG is a large Business firm in Melbourne and they are currently looking to
recruit new cadets for 2011. This is an opportunity for students to combine work
and study in the areas of Accounting or IT. Information evenings are being held on
18th, 25th and 26th May, from 6-8pm at their offices, 147 Collins Street, Melbourne.
Further information is available at www.kpmg.com.au or from the Careers Office.
