I've been told by my friends that in the exams, examiners won't read your answer if it goes off the provided lines?

They most certainly will read it, if they can decipher it. What your friends may be erroneously referring to is the border present on pages in some papers. If writing is outside this box, it cannot be read, as scans are taken of the paper and area outside this box is not scanned.

I am certain this is being implemented for Chem and Physics this year, though I am unsure of which other subjects this applies to.

But examiners will read your answers if they can. ie. clearly labeled as to which question each response is for etc.

Definitely not for Maths/Science. I wouldn't recommend it even. However, anything involving lots of writing (words that is, not numbers and calculations) should be done in pen so you don't piss off the examiner. Also stops you wasting time rubbing stuff out when you can just cross it out.

Except this year VCAA has stated that "students should only write in pen" in the Chemistry and Physics examinations. Because they're scanning the papers to allow "online assessment"...

Ah right, hadn't heard about that change. Well in that case guess you'll have to.

Yes I think you're right. They were explaining about how examiners scan the page and writing outside the scanned area won't be marked.
Well thanks everyone just needed to clarify since I write really messy under stress and my answers involve lots of arrows pointing everywhere  :)

When not answering multiple choice questions students should be advised to use blue or black pen or pencil, and not to write outside the page border.

I see pencil
