Write a mathematical expression for the statement 'y is greater than double of x by 3'.

This is a year 7/8 question, and it is not a trick question. I just want to know how you interpret the statement. Thanks.

I believe this is saying "y [y] is[=] greater by three[+3] than the double of x [2x]".

EDIT: Fixed equality.

y=2x+3.

To demonstrate what I mean let, x=1 and therefore y=5. It is true, as far as my understanding of english goes, that:

"5 is greater than 2 by 3"

but 2="double of 1"

so

"5 is greater than double of 1 by 3"

this is how i woud've interpreted it, but all the other ways to interpret it are just as valid with the right reasoning

however i think for it to be y>2x+3, it needed to be worded "'y is greater by three than double of x"

I'm sure "by 3" means multiply but now I'm really confused :|

I agree with 2x+3, but the question is a little ambiguous

This should clear it up
'...' is greater than '...' by 3
9 is greater than double 3, by 3
y is greater than double x, by 3

y=2x+3.

To demonstrate what I mean let, x=1 and therefore y=5. It is true, as far as my understanding of english goes, that:

"5 is greater than 2 by 3"

but 2="double of 1"

so

"5 is greater than double of 1 by 3"
yeah this would be my interpretation too, very solid reasoning behind it too.
