like. dude, you have three ppl from mgs doing uni maths, sif you dont likw work on it togeather? i only have myself at scotch.

Nop. Me and HJ do it by ourselves, and the other guy copies

i do them myself, but, like for the last assingment, i copied question 3b off joyce before class cos i couldn't do it ;)

xD I got help from Joyce as well for that assignment

lol at xia, an alos lol at the fact that joyce is like the.....pro of our class, still  don;t understand how she didn't absolutely cane methods.......it's defs not from a lack of maths ability......

LOL tram who do you copy from? I just do them myself >.<
And maybe the workload is less than a normal VCE subject, but not that much less. At the very least, the theory is harder than Spesh.
Lol do you do UMEP maths at my school too? How many people from MGGS this year doing it? I'm guessing about 3 as well?

ppl that do umep at mggs: three mgs guys (kyzo included) two mggs girls, one scotch guy(apprentely he's a real arrognat douche who's crap at maths :P ), three macrob girls, a rando from lillydale and a random from like carlton or something.

Good, it's a reasonably small class size :) Anyone absolutely mind-blowingly brilliant this year in the class? There normally is every year or two ;)

Yeah, everyone was really surprised with Joyce's methods score... most of the good maths kids last year didn't do that well.

Hmm, I don't think any of the olympiad kids do maths at MGGS, but some of the Mac.Rob girls are still very strong *cough*Joyce*cough*others*cough*

Ah and tram, don't worry about your assignment. I completely bombed mine. (I wouldn't have believed the score when I saw it, except for the fact that I spent no time on it whatsoever :/) At least I got 100 on the other UMEP assessment we got back that day, otherwise I'd have been pretty mortified.

xD HJ is the same as Joyce really. Same Methods score even. Everyone was shocked at his Methods score when they found out lol. Based on his SAC ranking and general maths ability, he should have got at least 47 or 48.

But in any case, I don't think anyone in our class is anywhere near someone like James Lu.

Serious? For MUEP most people have been getting 100s .... Your course is much harder, isn't it?

For UMEP physics, there's an assignment each semester, two tests, lab work and an exam. I think maths has a lot of assignments...

Haha, look how long the MUEP 3 hour exam is, anna... [Yes, I realise that this doesn't really belong here either... ]

mmmmm, well i'm just taking solace in the (90-10)/100 rule....so it's reli no biggie at all scrweing up an assingment here and there

lol, tbh, i have absolutely no idea, don't know what the muep program is like at all.....

but i'm defs struggling with umep:( need more time.......(yes, i realise this is comming from the person that does three propper subjects :P )

Is there just assessments and tasks for UMEP besides one exam at the end of the year...?

6 assingments,  a mid year and an end of year

Lol am I the only one here who has no idea who this Joyce person is? :P It amazes me that MacRob/Melb High are quite good at the science olympiads but no Macrobbians and only 1 Melb High guy got into the maths ever. Do you get training at school for the sciences?

Well, I go to school with Joyce so I know her :) Mac.Rob has no training whatsoever in the science. None.

Mac.Rob probably has low representation in the maths because we don't actually sit AIMO. The only girls who even get invited to sit competitions such as AMOC get selected because they do outstandingly in other competitions... and it's very rare to be invited solely on the basis of these. It also means that Mac.Rob is completely left out of the olympiad training cycle.

Yeah, it explains why Mac.Rob's probably had about 5 past science olympians (if you include this year), but never any in maths. And yes, there was one girl at school who was selected on the basis of her MUMC result to sit AMOC (for the same reason as AzureBlue), but most people don't take that competition at school (and most of the people who do (like myself) don't take it seriously at all...), so it's pretty much impossible as a Mac.Robbian...

in the nicest possible way, then mabey that means you shoudn''t do umep. In all seriousness, umep maths is a pretty hard slog. Like i know kyzoo and meself both find umep very challenging, most of the time in the lecture, we don;t understand what going on, we just copy down whats happening on the baord and have to work thu the notes at home to actually understand what going on. This is opposed to spech where, while it is by no means easy, i will actually understand everything that is going on on the board when the teacher writes is down. As oppsoed to umep, when i'm alwys dazzles and about 3-4 examples behind.

yea, basically, there's a reson why they require you to have A's in GMA, and that is to make sure you can cope with the course

having said, that i am a very strong advocate for doing umep and think that it is a fantastic subject to challenge yourself if you like maths and is very rewarding when you are able to do a tricky problem.

Is it hard to do a UMEP subject in good schools? Because you have to be top 5% of the cohort, apparently..

if you get can get a's in GMA and get above 40 ish you could probs get away with 37, you will get in, if your shcool is happy for you to do so

Naaaaahhhhhhh. I got a 31 in spesh, then a H1 in UMEP maths the year after by cramming the week before. It's not that bad.

pretty much, i think that in umep, we do a more than uni students would do in just accelerated maths one tho...

there has a been a shift to much more of an emphasis on linear algebra tho recently in umep

Yeah UMEP is actually equivalent to almost all of Calculus 2 and Linear Algebra, plus a small amount of Real Analysis (all you miss is first order ODEs, which are easy). Even though you don't technically get credit for them, you can still get into subjects requiring them as prereqs without them if you're smart about it. I got into Vector Calculus and Engineering Mathematics fine. On the flipside, my mate got kicked out of eng maths when they realised he hadn't fulfilled the pre-reqs.

Moral: If you never go to class, they don't know who you are and can't kick you out. ;)
