Ok that settles it.

I tried telling my teacher that. I just didn't understand why my teacher didn't tell us.

My teacher said benzene is not a functional group :(. As in don't even circle it. Don't know who to believe. And yea she said the double bond is a functional group.

Besides, never once have I seen it circled in the solutions to practice exams, so I need a clarification!!

yeah as matty just posted, it's not benzene as a functional group, it has another name which you don't need to know. but if you have to circle functional groups use double bonds or the common other ones in priority

Do you think we can circle a methyl group when asked for a functional group?

don't think you could in vce, they would most likely mark it as wrong. just look at the esters, hydroxy, carboxyl, multiple bonds and the obvious ones.

Although.... if it actually is, and you tell your teacher after the exam, if it is something that is out of study design but still correct, teachers can still consult the Chief examiner on this.
But Im sure VCAA would not try to trip people up soo badly.
