Prioritising 3/4 subject(s) over 1/2 subjects...?
« on: June 21, 2010, 11:12:56 pm »

I was just asking to know, if I should be prioritising my 3/4 subject, that is Accounting (which is my only 3/4, since I'm in Year 11) over my 1/2 subjects. (I've been told different things, by teachers and past students...) :S

- What did other VN users do, past or present? I figured since it's my only 3/4... I should spend more time on it, as it actually counts to my VCE score... although I know I shouldn't neglect my 1/2's...

- Did people, just focus on their 3/4's... or have a balance between the two...?

Thanks. :)

find a balance but prioritise your 3/4. if you are having trouble balancing, try and fix it quick before year 12, but if you cant, screw your 1/2s as they dont count as you can always catch up over holidays/breaks.
but having a single 3/4 is easy, you can manage fine if you want, but when exams are around don't study for your 1/2's too much if you know you could be using that time for your 3/4

goodluck!

I definitely would, particularly as it gets closer to exam time, if you've only got 1 3/4 it makes sense to put all your effort into it.

Yeh, that's what I did. I did like a billion Accounting exams before the mid-year exam, and neglected my 1/2's altogether. but what sucked, was the Accounting 3/4 exam was crammed in between my 1/2 exams... the school's fault more than anything. bad timing.

Thanks, for the advice! :)

This. Last year I basically forgot I had other classes. It worked somewhat.

some schools don't let students continue subjects like methods and chem into 3/4 level because they've neglected them during year 11 and done really badly - it's okay to put more emphasis on accounting since it will count towards your ATAR, but make sure you leave yourself enough time to study and not wholly neglect your other 5 subjects.

err... my school makes us do 6 subjects + a 3/4 subject (optional). It's harder said then done... lol, I'm finding it hard to get the balance between doing my 3/4 to my 1/2 subjects... but currently it's more or less 60% Accounting, 40% 1/2's for me. does that seem right as a balance?

Thanks for the advice!

Generally how much time would people spend on their 3/4 subject if they wanted to obtain a score over 40? :)

Thanks.

It is difficult to prioritise, I found it especially hard in year 11.

You see, you might think you don't mind doing badly in your 1/2s but believe me, you will when you see poor results. What I did was mainly concentrate on Methods and Psych and spend time on my 1/2s before assessments. I concentrated mainly on Chem and Accounting in my 1/2s, bludged English (wish I didn't) and wasted away French after semester 1 (I was positive on dropping it). It's hard and requires a lot of studying if you want to do well across everything I guess... :S

I would tend to agree with this.

I studied equally for all my subjects... though come exams or sacs for my 3/4, all that existed for me was that 3/4.

Impossible to say. Depends on the subject, the person, how much effort you've put in over the year.

But as general rule, as much time as you possibly can. :D

Yeah, that's probably what I agree with too :) While your 3/4 is important, neglecting the 1/2s means you don't have the solid foundations for your 3/4 subjects the following year and could really damage performance the following year...
