Does rank 1 in sacs normally get the highest SS in the school?
If not, from your experience, what ranks managed to get high SS's? (It would help if you can say how strong the cohort is)

A friend got 40 in bio last year, but she wasn't rank 1(maybe rank 2 or 3). She got the highest score in the cohort. I think it was a pretty weak cohort but there were 3 really smart kids.

Hmm so ranked last out of 3 very bright students and got the highest score. How big was the class?

Well it gives you a good chance.

I had rank 1 position for Psych, Accounting and Further Maths and got the highest study score for them in my school.

But two examples:

Me - I got rank 1 for Chem SACs at my school but got 44, which wasn't the highest SS. The highest was 50.

Another girl - got rank 1 for Maths Methods but ended up with 44. Highest SS in the school was 49 that  year.

So I guess whilst it suggests there is a strong likelihood that you will end up with the highest SS, it does not guarantee it.
Raw Scores:
Psychology 50 | Mathematical Methods 49 | Further Mathematics 49 | Accounting 49 | Chemistry 44 | English 43
ATAR: 99.75

I'm pretty sure that rank 1 in my bio class got highest score (which was only 1 point higher than mine) and I was probably sporting a middle-ranking. This is a weak/average cohort with ~20 people.

The stronger the cohort the less crucial rank 1 is.

Is english a rather special case where the marks get scattered everywhere?

This. I know many examples where people not ranked top in sacs have been able to get the highest score and vice versa. Looking at the top five people in methods last year at my school. There was TT on nubmer one, three ppl on equal second and me on fifth.

The top five scorers were:

-someone ranked 11 ish who got 49
-TT who got 48
-me and a friend who was ranked 7th got 47
-One of the people who was ranked second and about three or four other people who were ranked in the teens/low twenties

the other people who were ranked equal second got i think 43/44

There is no gurantee, but it can be a good INDICATOR

The person who got the top SAC score last year in my cohort got 42.  Kyzoo was ranked around the same as me (15th or so?) and got 48, the top score.
