WTF is the sanctions?

An epic way of saying "we are not ready so we shall make up a word to make it seem like you are the one at fault".

Looks like it must have been a nightmare for both the server and students trying to get in at 10 AM and earlier on today.  I decided to sleep in after watching the World Cup and started creating mine a few minutes ago.  On my end, I've experienced no problems with the timetable.  I got everything I wanted, including successfully switching to ALL the psychology tutes available with no problems.

The only thing I need to do is wait for a pending subject change request and find a way to squeeze that onto my timetable.

Despite all the negative comments, I can only praise UoM for changing to the new system because unlike our friends (or rivals depending on how you look at it) at Monash, we've had our timetable generated for us in previous years and if you're doing a course which has a gazillion contact hours, then it's hard to change lecture streams and tute times to suit your availability especially if they are full.  With this new system, we can create from scratch to work around us.

Personally, I've found this system easy to use.  Some negatives are that it's very slow to load and I've had one error page so far.  Also, it is also very crowded and there's a lot of information to take in.  Can you imagine a brand, spanking new Jaffy in 2011 trying to create their own timetable with this system?  I would imagine they would get heart palpitations and just die of a heart attack before the semester even starts considering all the administrative tasks they would have had to do beforehand.

Yeah it wouldn't let me do it because of the sanctions

Did you try before today? Because I had a sanction a couple of weeks ago and it got removed after I tried to change subjects/filled out some info that was missing. Is the system working for everyone else now at least?

And to whoever it was that asked, no you can't see which lecturers take which streams (but if you absolutely must have one, just go to their lecture instead, nobody will know)

Oh, the new system is more useful than alloc8, it's just that combining it with the portal has made it a nightmare in terms of lag and browsers crashing

Only just found out that timetables were open like half an hour ago after seeing and reading through this thread. After logging onto the portal however, I found it very simple and easy to use. Probably due to lower traffic than this morning/yesterday, but still, I like the new system. As mentioned, it's nice to be able to start from scratch rather than be allocated automatically. Thumbs up!

I fail to see how Monash, with far more students in far more subjects manages to timetable its classes without any issue whatsoever and the GREAT UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE can't even make 10% of its students happy. I am yet to hear a SINGLE complaint about the monash timetabling system. How hard is it to get right? The software is readily available, it clearly works on a larger scale.

UoM administration is just dumb.

I think they have got it right. Only thing I'm pissed with is my breadth only has tutes on fucking fridays...

As with new things, it will most definitely start off with glitches and will be prone to errors.  As time passes, I'm sure we'll see all these errors ironed out and we'll be up to speed with Monash.  Despite all this, you still have to give credit to the IT staff for coordinating such a behemoth feat of getting it up and running pretty well on the first day, unlike the new ticketing system that is sort of running but not really working 100% after all these months.

I can't do anything to change my breadth subject since I have some sanction on me. Oh well my other subjects are cool, but as for breadth. FML

Have you checked your uni email?

Dear Student

As you are aware the University has recently implemented a new student
system (ISIS).  A number of unexpected issues have arisen in the
implementation of this system and some changes are now required to the
advice to students about the process for changing subjects for semester
2 2010.  The Student Timetable (Class Registration) opened today and the
EPSC is working towards ensuring students wanting to make changes to
their semester 2 2010 enrolments can do so as soon as possible in order
to access the Timetable.

At this stage most students will not have access to change their
subjects via the Student Portal.  If you are looking at changing
subjects for semester 2 2010 immediately, you can apply to do so
directly to the EPSC - either via email or hardcopy.

Important:

If you are looking at adding a subject to your enrolment, please ensure
that:

*         You have satisfied any prerequisites/co-requisites as listed
in the 2010 Handbook entry.

*         The subject fits within the course structure of your degree.

*         You indicate the subject that you want replaced in your
semester 2 enrolment - if your enrolment is already full-time. (i.e.
Requests to overload in semester 2 will not be considered until results
from semester 1 are released).

If you are sending a request via email please note the following:

*         The email must be sent from your University ITS account

*         Send to [email protected]

*         Include in the Subject Field: "Subject Change Request Semester
2, 2010"

*         Include your name, your student ID and your course

*         Include the NEW subject code and subject name of the subject/s
you want added. Refer to the 2010 Handbook for NEW codes. New codes are
a combination of 4 letters and 5 digits e.g. BIOL10004.

*         Include the NEW subject code and subject name of the subject/s
you want deleted from your semester 2 enrolment. New codes are a
combination of 4 letters and 5 digits e.g. BIOL10004.

*         Include a statement that you acknowledge that you have
satisfied the subject's prerequisites/co-requisites (if appropriate)

The EPSC will attempt to process your request within 3 working days.  If
approved, the enrolment amendment can be viewed via the Student Portal.

Please bear in mind that this is a peak time in the EPSC and we are
expecting a large number of students will wish to amend their subjects.
As these changes need to be processed manually and will take some time
within ISIS your patience would be appreciated.

Margot Eden

Manager, Eastern Precinct Student Centre

I think those two methods in the email are the only two ways of changing subjects for semester 2.

I didn't either.
It's from one of the faculties which would not be Arts. Arts would never send something out like that; it would require too much organisation on their part lol.

It was sent by the Eastern Precinct Student Centre (EPSC).  So if you're studying biomedicine, engineering or science then you should have received the email.  So for those students, that's how you change your subjects.  For other faculties, I'm not very sure.

Yeah that's what concerns me, since I've gotten previous emails from them but not that one. Oh well, not a big deal, my S2 timetable is set.

If you're doing either of those three degrees, I think you should have received the email.  Otherwise, something is seriously screwed up, not just the portal/timetabling system.

Is anyone getting the same problem as me?

I'm trying to access the timetable (which I could do so easily last night) through the Admin tab, but when I click it, it comes up with a login screen. I've tried many times but still get the 'your logon was unsuccesful' bullshit.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I can't swap out of my classes - it comes up with an error msg. I'm stressed :(
