University of Melbourne 2010 semester 1 results thread.

Question:
Got my lit essay worth 50% back in the mail today.
Given mark was H2A+, let's assume that means 79%
I got a H2A for the mid semester essay worth 30%
And a H1 for the first essay, worth 50%.
My overall score?  86% H1.
Howwww does this happen!?  Even if I had gotten 100% on the first essay, I would still average an 83% at the highest.
Is this something to do with modulation?

I don't think they modulate as such.
But they do scale up to the nearest whole number when a score is converted.
Say you got a 78 for an essay yet it was only worth 25% of your mark, this equates to a score of 19.5/25. In terms of calculating your final result, this would scale up to 20/25 for that piece of assessment, making it a H1.

Heat and Mass was insanely hard, so my mark is the result of mega scaling.
Management was a surprise too, given how much I bullshitted on the exam

Hey! I really didn't enjoy devpsych.. I didn't like the way it was taught and the material was at times quite dry. The exam was also quite difficult and I relied on previously written essays which I had remembered. I think a much better option would be genetics, health and society which I will do next year...

Listen to this man (woman?). I honestly think somebody who didn't do the subject could get a good mark, a lot of the exam is just common sense.

eg. "Discuss why young people are so concerned with visible differences, with respect to the effects of the media, society and their parents"

Those marks are awesome! Getting 90% for ESD 1 means that you truely are an engineer.

With From Plato to Einstein I really hope that the tests aren't in the lectures, since the first lecture clashes with my Group Theory and Linear Algebra lecture and the second lecture clashes with my physics prac.

I really enjoyed the content of developmental psych, however, the way it was delivered was extremely tedious- particularly the section given by Fiona Reynolds on Language, Culture and Number. I thought Jeanette Lawrence's section on children's rights, responsibilities, procedural/distributive justice was really interesting- I hope to pursue these topics in the third year units next year.
I didn't find the exam too difficult- the multiple choice questions were a tad tricky but the essay questions were reasonably fair I thought. Mary did prepare us quite well for the essay question section, however, the multiple choice questions in the exam were certainly not a reflection of the practice ones at all. I thought it was a disgrace that we weren't allowed any extra script paper if we exceeded the three pages of space given for each question.
However, I ended up with a 91 overall for the subject which I was absolutely stoked with.

I have no interest in children or how they develop, so needless to say I didn't enjoy developmental psychology very much, either. Biological >>>>> Developmental. Anyway, after completing semester one's subjects, I know to avoid the third year developmental psychology subjects, and also the one about sleep and emotions

Hahahaha Adam- so true about the 'psychology of sleep and emotions'- sounds like a recipe for disaster.
