lmao

First year Physics is fucking, incredibly, fantastically shit at Monash. Especially semester one, wouldn't know about semester 2 because Im not doing it, weeeeee.

If they get rid of David Mills, it might get better, but I doubt they would.

Is first year the only 'bad' year, as such?

If you choose to major in physics, lucky you. Enjoy the worst physics department ever for three years. Menzies is quite tall, feel free to jump off it.

Honestly I think you shouldn't worry about it. I think you'll get into ANU,UNSW or USYD. If you want the victorian equivalent of ANU's PhB then Deans Scholars at Monash is probably as close as you'll get.

If you're really dedicated to physics it shouldn't matter what the lecturers are like because a lot of the stuff you can self-teach.

However if you're like Akirus and want to do things like Quantum Field Theory and General Relativity in 3rd year just go to ANU.

[Off-topic]

@Cthulhu: What kind of physics are you interested in? I personally am interested in particle physics and have been doing some reading on electron spin.

[/Off-topic]

Anyway I still don't understand why people are wanting to jump into quantum field theory and general relativity in third year when there is so much of the basics to cover!

In second year we really only looked at 1-D problems that were stationary states. So basically observing wavefunctions for particles in infinite wells, finite square wells, harmonic oscillators and a few tunneling applications. Then our 3-D problems were a potential box and a central force problem (e.g. The hydrogen atom).
