I think the article is a bit bias (hey they need to sell papers some how) and before you even start reading it the pictures set you up with a bad image...its easy to skew things one way or another when you use pictures like that. I think a common sense approach is useful: Sure there may be a few racist people in australia just like everywhere else.

I agree, there's racist people everywhere you go. But i think that a lot of people view Australian's as racists because we joke about races a lot. Not in a racist way though, but we take the mickey out of cultural differences. But we need to sort out our problems with aboriginies, granted

Ye, I agree with you. The policies vis-a-vis Aborigines need to be re-evaluated.
Force feeding them obscene pensions and center-link benefits so that they can drink beer all day is an appalling, elitist form of treatment.
The Aussie Gov is treating indigenous Australians like Palestinains - throwing money at them and perpetuating a culture of unemployment and self-pity.

IF that's not racism - then it's idiocy - and your parents are paying taxes for it.

Sport fanaticism and racism are entirely separate phenomena. . .

What is racism?

The only way one must judge a country is through how liberal the views are of the country. Countries all around the world are are at a different level of open-mindedness. India is lagging far behind than Australia for example. As time goes on, people become more liberal, we're lucky that Australia is one of those countries that is leading the way.

Institutionalized racism isn't a problem in oz - we are certainly a beacon of democracy in a world plagued by tyrannical third world regimes and Arab theocracies.
It's a hypothetical as to whether Australians themselves hold racist views (wittingly or unwittingly)

A lot of people are getting mixed up between racism and human nature. Racism is when you TREAT one in a derogatory manner purely due to their race. Human nature is when you develop views/generalisations based on your rational thinking from what you've witnessed/heard.

MOST Australians are in the "Human nature" category and thus the answer to "Are Australians racist?" is no, they're not.

Is it racist that Indigenous Aussies and Torres Straight Islanders get special treatment and opportunities not offered to others?

It's the Australian Government's way of trying not to be racist... obviously not working though

Yes, it's racist, btu it's to provide assistance to a disadvantaged group in society

You could just as easily say SEAS is economic situation...ist
