VCE summer school

Heyah guaiz.

I got a VCE summer school 'referral' from my school, now of course; the choice is up to me if I go or not.. but I'm just really confused as if I should go or not. Its located at the University of Melbourne.
http://union.unimelb.edu.au/summerschool    -> The link for it.
Pros
  • I will know more about the subjects than other members of my class.
  • Meet new people etc.
  • See what its like at a univeristy
  • See what professional tutoring is like

Cons
  • Costs $160 dollars for a normal day to day attendance (Goes for 2 weeks) or $500 dollars for a residential stay

Seeing as my social-life is near non-existent, missing out on 'prosu summer holidays' won't be a problem, the only problem would be getting there..
Should I go? Give me your reasons.

2 weeks straight of your holidays learning the year 12 course.....if you're that willing to get a head start you should just go to the summer lectures. Thing is, even if you have the head start, your teachers will start from the very beginning. Thus your year 12 could get boring and you may not end up spending the required time on the subjects throughout the year. I wouldn't go to this. Also you'd be missing out on valuable videogaming time (you won't get much time for this in year 12)

I'm completely opposite to Jimmy, if you want to do well this is the perfect way to get ahead, and considering you have little social life (im sure you don't have absolutely none) then it shouldn't be too much of a problem, you can smash year 12 and be able to do what you want after from a higher ENTER from starting studying for exams earlier (possible to start exams towards the beginning of the year for some subjects), it's year 12- a horribly long year- once your done, then you want to make sure you've done the best you possible could have done, and then ENJOY UNI (or gap year, etc.)

Isnt that the thing that all schools get invited to? I don't know, ours got a whole box of pamphlets sent to us last year.

Well for one, if its at the Parkville campus, its not really in the middle of nowhere, in fact, its in the middle of everywhere ;] getting there wouldn't be much of a problem since it's only one train ride away ;]

Since you said your social life is non-existent, this would be a good way to meet new friends and you could foster new friendships and perhaps build a social life ;]

but IMO, if you want a headstart in class, learning the course by yourself would be much more beneficial, you could get a lot more done by yourself in two weeks than you would going to those classes.

If you do decide to go, then take a friend and go for the residential program. By the looks of it that program has a major social aspect so not only will you learn for year 12 but get to have non-academic fun.

That would be the only reason i would go

its ok for good head start for all your subjects and at a cheap price, ive had mix feedback from my friends so i can not give a solid opinion. But i heard you meet alot of ppl which is good for social reasons such as getting to know potential tutors, also getting know ppl from everywhere in terms of melbourne coz students from all places go there and if you guys become friends you can share notes, maybe meet up at uni the benefits are obvious.

We have bursaries for students who can't otherwise afford it. I tutor with the program (i posted about it a while ago in the tutoring forum) and it's a fairly good overview of year 12. You'll get notes on each of the subjects that you're doing and a tutor will go "teach" them over the two weeks. Most of the tutors know what they're doing but since it's all volunteers you might get a couple that aren't so switched on.

There is a pretty big social component, you get a tshirt to identify you and there are activities and groups and all that. I got the impression that the people who went last year were really enjoying themselves. If you check Facebook there are a whole bunch of groups about VCESS so that might give you an idea of whether it's for you.
