There are other ways to get into the course you want other than repeating year 12.
Anyone that repeats year 12 is fucking nuts. It's just easier to suck it up and do a different course at the uni you want to go to or go do the same course at a different uni and then transfer to your uni/course of choice.

You spent a year of your life working your ass off and still didn't get what you wanted why would you attempt to do the same thing again 1 year later?

I don't mean to sound cruel but everyone on this forum bitches about how hard VCE is and you would seriously consider doing it again?

Just get into a course somewhere else and then transfer. Less stressful on you and everyone around you. I'm speaking from experience.

^KINGP: It depends what you do, you can eliminate any sort of 'grey'
- If i do bio and work hard, for example, i am pretty sure i can get a good score if i'm doing such few subjects to focus on. So i'd possibly bio. So choose a subject you are quite confident that you can do well that you didnt have a chance before.
- If you can do a language and want to put in effort for it, they scale well, so do that if you think you may be able to get a high score after scaling
BUT these are for more 'grey' than repeating subjects:
- Repeating science/math subjects will get you a higher score almost definitely (unless it was already well into the 40s then its a bit...) & so if i ended up getting let's say 38 in methods, since i know the course so well i could start off doing prac exams and will be able to aim for ~45. Or you may get 38 in bio and repeat it and get 45, or the same could happen for chem, etc.
- Repeating english language or some subject you know you could do better in, ex. getting 30 and working hard for 35 in your english will definitely improve your score. Or doing a different english and getting mad tutoring to aim even higher!

So yeah, repeating can, if chosen the right subjects, give you the chance to get a better score and improve your chances, and also study for UMAT for med entry improve.

You're scaring me now... i dont know whether i should do biomed/science anymore if i dont get into med

Graduate medicine is not that scaryhard to get into, it just sounds it.

Anyway, my opinion on repeating...back when I was in year 12 I had personal health problems that were diagnosed midway through the year, just in time for exams and the UMAT. I didn't get a DES (did get SEAS and AEA though), but my enter was pretty good anyway. I considered repeating, since I was confident that if I sat the UMAT a second time I'd be offered an interview for ugrad med based on my previous score. Then I decided that it just wasn't worth it. I could spend the year doing the same stuff and taking some subjects that I hadn't previously (I did Renaissance history and Classics instead of Biology and Lit) and improving my score, but I'd rather move on. Maybe if I hadn't gotten into my first choice course I'd have reconsidered again, but I doubt it. I knew I was going to get where I wanted to be, so doing an extra degree wasn't particularly upsetting, I looked forward to the experience.

So if you're set on it, don't let me talk you out of it, but I just didn't think it was worth it. There are plenty of other ways to get there that will be a more enjoyable journey *shrugs*

e, everyone saying that monash doesn't accept transfers, is that new? I had a friend do 1st year at UoA and transfer (non standard I assume) to monash med...

"not undertaken any tertiary studies."

I have known about this for quite some time, so it's not exactly new.

According to their Medicine Entry lecture, Med is a non-transferrable course, as in you can't transfer in from biomed after a year or something. If I heard right, that is.
Why not do biomed and try at melb uni if you're so bent on being a doctor?

hey, i'm not interested in med
but just checked the vtac guide for monash and it says:
"This course is only available to CY12 or applicants who have completed VCE or equivalent no more than two years previously and have not undertaken any tertiary studies"

Now, my English is not very good and the statement seems a bit ambiguous to me. What does this mean? Does this mean you cannot apply for undergrad med if you have spent more than two years studying the VCE? And if they do mean this, do they mean "no more than two years" studying year 12? Or is this just for people who have completed year 12 however haven't done much since then (e.g. gap year undertakers)? people who want to do the UMAT again etc.

I think this is what 99.95_for_sure's career counsellor was confused about.

I'm pretty sure it just means that if you completed VCE then bummed around for two years you can't then apply for med

it's still pretty effing hard >:p
not only is it arguably more competitive, but you only get to put 3 preferences down for all med grad schools, and can only get one interview. so a single rejected and you missed out for the year..

Oh it's still hard, but you certainly shouldn't be thinking that if you didn't get into ugrad you'll never be able to get into pgrad. From memory there are more places in pgrad, but that's not too much of a difference.

The GPA and interview aren't that bad, if you pick a degree you love then worrying about your GPA is something that won't happen often. The interview is the same as ugrad (probably); I don't find them that daunting but I gather that's pretty variable. And then there's the GAMSAT. Which is pretty damn tough, but you don't need to ace it, just get a good ranking. I know people who aren't brilliant but still pulled a top 10% score, which is competitive.

Although UoM says you should resit if your overall score is lower than a 70, which is hilarious.

Either way, good luck with the future.

agreed that postgrad med is a better option. If you really want to do med, you should show that through an interest in science (or nursing) and good grades. You also get way more uni choices if you go postgrad. You will get in to med if you want it enough for the right reasons.

On a related note, I'm not trying to sell ANU here necessarily, but very few people have heard of this (I'm not sure if it applies to next year, you'll have to ask someone):
Quote
Year 12 students who achieve a UAI/ENTER/TER of 98 or higher or are in OP Band 1 may apply for provisional admission to the ANU Medical School. Students who have a home address in Very Remote, Remote and Outer Regional Australia or have applied for admission to University under the Educational Access Scheme will also be considered for provisional admission with a UAI of 93 or higher or an OP score of 4 or less. Details of the provisional admission scheme and how to determine home locality may be found at http://medicalschool.anu.edu.au/admission.  Those applying for provisional admission must make themselves available for interview in Canberra in January following release of their scores. Those interviewing satisfactorily will be offered provisional admission to the Medical School, provided they enrol in one of the single or combined Bachelor degree programs at ANU. The chosen degree program must be completed within the minimum time required of an applicant undertaking full-time study. This will usually be three years for a Bachelors degree, four years for an Honours degree and four or five years for combined Bachelors degrees, depending on the degree combination. Provisional entry to Medical School will only be converted to offer of a place by achievement of a GAMSAT score and GPA as required for normal graduate entry (see ‘Admission for Local Students' on the website). There will be no necessity for a further interview.

hell no, i'd never re-do year 12. There's so many other ways to get into your courses. For me year 12 has sucked balls so I will never do it again even if i got an ENTER of 60. There's so many courses out there you just gotta look around.

Is it worth repeating year 12 just to get a scholarship? in terms of money... it sounds good? lose 1 year of your life for potentially your whole uni course FREE! so say for a 5 year course of 8k each... it's 1 year extra for 40k

sounds sweet!
