Oh okay, that would make sense for it to be marked harshly. Perhaps it is difficult to get the state average, but it just didn't appear so (i don't even do latin haa) and i still wouldn't even be able to gauge the difficulty of the exam even if you explained it to me.. so i'll just listen that it is ^__^ it is 'latin' after all.

Also, because of its difficulty, I'd say that only the students who are good at the subject would do it, unlike in some other subjects. As a result, it would be much harder to get a good mark in it

yep thats true i checked before actually.
example to get roughly 30 (using the mean score of exam) in Italian it is just under 50%, whereas in latin in is about 63% though Latin still out does the other languages due to it's scaling (scaled 46 in italian is around 70%)

I'm also under the impression that only the elite private schools teach latin...?

Most likely, I can only think of one that does (MGS)

Pretty much...although there are a few exceptions.

From memory, schools that offer Latin include Xavier, MGS, PEGS, MGGS, Haileybury and Camberwell. Uni High is probably the most outstanding exception.

Just out of interest, what % of people studying Latin typically get a 30+ study score? Raw, that is.

same as any other degree, just over 50%.

what i think about this latin:
if your willing to commit to working at a language, and ignoring the fact that it's dead and (according to most) extremely boring to learn via the schooling methods, then you will be rewarded greater then pretty much all other languages. i'm actually learning a bit of latin now and it's kind of fun xD however, i am skipping the grammar specifics (probably why..)
(stupid procrastination)

So the fact that only 1 or 2 people get 48+ in Latin each year is an indicator that the relative amount of students taking the subject is small, not because the distribution of study scores is different?

Yep, there aren't enough students to fill up all of the study scores, although if a student (or two) do exceptionally well compared to the rest of the cohort, then maybe they could get a 49 or 50
Remember, remember the 5th of November

2010 - MM CAS (47) - Cisco 1+2 (pass :P)
2011 - Eng - Phys - Chem - Spesh - Latin - UMAT

^ getting a 49 or 50 is pointless though, you get pretty much the same score with ~40 hah.

hmm i flicked through another part of the latin course, and have no idea what this 'scanning' and 'using the meter' means, i searched google but it looks confusing >_>

Lol but you get like a 54-55, it's pretty cool :) I don't know anyone who has gotten 50 lol, they are rare but do exist, I think the people who get 48s are already latin genuises :)

Last year the highest score was 47 raw which scaled to a 54.something. The only person to have ever gotten a 50 raw is this dude from Xavier in 2000.

Ok. I conclude, from a scan through the archives, that Xavier is good at Latin.

Top Latin Study Score per year:
47 - 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009
48 - 2001, 2002
49 - 2004, 2006
50 - 1998, 2000

So what determines if the top student of Latin in each year gets say, a 47 or a 50? Is it dependent on the number of students taking Latin per year. If so, doesn't that mean that the intake of Latin students has statistically dropped?

^ They are awesomeeee, so jealous i didn't study two languages throughout school ><
Even cooler is Jap+Latin, they are completely different!
Whereas german & french have similarities to Latin. Moreso French, as people say that if you learn Latin, learning any Romantic Language because so much easier.
