I only did it because friends were doing it, they studied.. and are Asian- I still managed to do better... Selective schools crush people mang. Seeing a "Below average" can make people die inside:P

But the school does have the potential to improve the person imo, just through competitiveness. Probably would have got low 90s without MHS powar lulz.

My friends tried out for it. Its in Clayton- too far away. Although JMSS is gradually becoming a technology based school.. I'd still prefer to go to somewhere more prestigious/well known (MHS).
The prestige of your high school probably isn't going to matter in the long run unless you have a really nepotistic employer.

I think the school sounds great for kids who know they'd like to specialise in science. It just seems strange to me, because at that age I'd probably have no idea about what I'd like to be my speciality. I bet it will perform well in the result because there is a self-selection bias - people who like and are good at science will go there which means it'll be easy for the school get good marks out of the students.

Lots of people know what kind of school MHS is, my point is that I'd prefer to go to a school with a good reputation rather than a school with next to no reputation/not well known.

^ Yes, and I'm saying that the fact that people know the name of your school is not a big deal. The fact that you learn a lot and like the atmosphere is.

To a certain extent yes, but even still, you are at an advantage going to a school such as MHS (I think)
I'm not saying that by going there you automatically recieve 99+ or anything like that, I agree that eventually it comes down to the individual as to how well they do, but I'd be quite sure that if you took everyone out of MHS, and brought them to a school such as mine, who had 7x 40+ out of a cohort of ~250, there would be no way that we would get 161 40+, which is the number that MHS got in English last year.
Thats just my thoughts, I'm just saying, I'd kill to be at one of these top schools, but unfortunately, I'm nearly 2hrs away from Melb :(

LOL. around 5 or 6 kids from my school transferred to MHS, because their grades were good enough to get in. BUT, in saying that, one guy left in Year 8 - I think (to MHS) and then came back to our school in Year 10 (last year)... weirder things have happened. MHS, being a selective school means that it will consisently perform well and it ranks as one of the top schools when the VCE results are published each year.

ALSO, I have a friend who goes to MHS... he plays HOCKEY. MHS are pretty competitive when it comes to SPORTS, not just on the ACADEMIC side of things... their WATER POLO team is frigging good as well - apparently they have a few STATE players in their team (my school plays theirs in a few sports!)

My friend went to Macrob and came back, she didn't like the environment. I think that is perfectly fair because you know, to each his own. Everyone works differently.

exactly. people who work hard will benefit from these type of schools. people who dont will feel like they aren't 'good enough' and this will ultimately affect their marks i guess.

I suppose another advantage for the kids going into JMSS is the ability for integration with scientists from the University itself. That fact can't be denied.
