for the double degree

pros:
-complete two bachelor degrees in 5 years
-satisfies med prereques (if you are looking into that)
-lower enter than biomed at melb

cons:
-dont get a common first year in engineering (you may see that as a plus if you know what type of engineering you want to do)
-restrictions to what engineering stream you want to pursue
-gears you toward biomedical ingineering (not toward any other type)

I know this is thread resurrection and what not but i think its important for anyone who searches this to read it.

Biomed/Eng takes 5 years, post graduate medicine is 4, 5+4=9.

The government is only willing to pay for 7 years of education.

Medicine without government support is roughly $50,000 a year (yes 50 thousand)

(if you're considering doing medicine that is or any kind of post grad, if not you dont need to worry about this)

That isn't how SLE works. You have 7 years of ugrad and then can get extra for pgrad entry courses or longer ugrad courses (eg medlaw, medphd)

Really? It seems to be for any subject and based on the EFTSL. You can get more for longer courses or postgraduate degrees, but your initial allowance is still only 7 years for ug/pg

Regardless of how much it costs, if it's your dream course, then you won't let money hold you back, (unless you can't get any fee loan thingos). If you do Biomed/Eng, after your 5 years you can either work as an engineer or get into postgrad medicine.

If you do just Biomed at UoM, then the only eng option you have is Biomedical Engineering. I would pick the first option. After a few years, you'll probably know if you'd rather do Medicine or Engineering and thus can drop either part of the degree to focus on the other. At UoM, you'd be stuck into biomed unless you transfer over to science. Also the double degree will allow you to experience Biomed and Engineering in more depth than UoM's degree which in my opinion is a much better thing to do

Yeah, there are different requirements etc. There's a system in place for you to "regenerate" SLE so you can go back to study as a mature age student and still get a CSP

I thought the only way to get "additional SLE" (as it's called) is if you have not completed a degree at any Australian insititution.

Because it's run by the government it's as confusing as possible, but I'm under the impression that you can get extra. It won't matter for me so I never really bothered to check.

But you can't get extra for free.  Otherwise people would just stay at uni forever and do every single degree possible and not go into the workforce to pay back the debt (exaggeration of course).

EDIT:  I found this:

additional SLE: an extra entitlement to ensure that eligible students have enough SLE to undertake a program in a Commonwealth supported place.
Additional SLE will be provided to:

  • eligible students enrolling in undergraduate programs which run for longer than six years;
  • honours programs;
  • graduate entry bachelor degrees; and
  • a small number of postgraduate coursework programs.

The amount of additional SLE that students receive depends on the program they are enrolled in and whether they have used additional SLE in the past.

Yeah based on the last line, I'd assume it's an application type thing where they consider your history.

Off the top of my head, the government gives extra SLEs if you're doing graduate-entry courses like medicine.
