Summer Semester?

Because my own research on the net has got me nowhere.

In particular reference to Arts, what sort of subjects are available in the summer semester?

There are only very limited offerings from Arts in terms of summer subjects.
There are a few subjects available from School of Historical Subjects- but these involve 6 week intensives which involve studying abroad.
There are also a few history subjects (which are on-campus) during the winter break.

Is there actually a page on which the summer semester subjects for each faculty are listed or do you have to check each subject in the handbook?

could you use this: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/faces/htdocs/user/search/AdvancedSearch.jsp and just specify 'summer semester' as the study period?

Good idea :) In the case of subjects like, say, "Derivative Securities" (https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2010/FNCE30007), when it says Date and Location: January, Semester 1, Semester 2, 2010, Parkville.
What's the difference between January and Summer term?
^ The subject doesn't appear when I specify "Summer term" in advanced search.

Summer semester is January + February, maybe that one just runs for one month. More likely, the coordinator just meant summer semester and entered the wrong thing.

As if you're worrying now, you won't take that subject for another few years.

Actually, I'm not sure if I'm going to take that subject at all! I've had lots of fun making course timetables though :) If I want to complete a BComm (Econ/Fin major) + DipMSc, it fits into 3 years according to the rules with 1 overload subject in 3rd year + that summer subject. And BComm (Econ) + DipMSc fits in without overloading/summer at all :) Actuarial Studies is quite inflexible, everything's compulsory for accreditation bar 3 breadth subjects...

That's so...keen.

Also don't take summer semester subjects in 3rd year or you won't be able to graduate with your cohort.

Why thank you :) How about a 3rd year subject at the January of your 3rd year (as opposed to 4th) - as you would've fulfilled the pre-requisite subjects in 2nd year?

That's fine. Doing them after third year means you haven't satisfied your degree requirements so you can't graduate with everyone you studied with.

Thanks for the replies! I wasn't sure if classes ran during the winter break, but that's just as good as the summer semester, I suppose. Probably better.

I know that many JD classes run in the winter semester: refer http://jd.law.unimelb.edu.au/go/the-course/subject-pages
Are there any non-law subjects in winter?

Since you cannot specify 'winter semester' as the study period on the handbook search, is there any way to find the subjects offered, just out of interest? Thanks for the information.

If it's not a search option, then no easy way. I was considering doing a roman history one which was advertised in the old quad (ie a hard copy), so maybe they're not on handbook as a specific category.
