'It is our cultural background that has the most influence on the development of our sense of self.' (identity and belonging prompt)
Brainstorm!
Keywords: cultural background, influence, development of our sense of self.
- What is cultural background?
- This prompt is predominantly witness-based (could probably use Catcher in the Rye but to a lesser extent by discussing the cessation of Holden's maturation due to a lack of culture)
- e.g. The amish's identity is derived from the collective, they are defined by their role within the greater commune
- e.g. Noteworthy barn-raising scene, develops a sense of community and belonging whereby no one is left feeling isolated or alone.
- John Book's 'cultural background', namely Philadelphia can be described as an effigy of immorality and corruption. Those living in such a community are influenced to adopt a similar mentality. Here is where discussion can be brought up to explore the prompt more deeply. Although Book lives in this slum, his moral veracity shields him from conformity, and as a result, he elicits a strong desire to feel belonging. This leads to his somewhat tenuous acceptance into the Amish community. It is through his crashing of modernity into the birdhouse of simplicity, the clash of asymmetric paradigms (cultural clash?) that leads him to embrace and epitomise their way of life. His experiences and prolonged exposure is the causation of his eyes opening to the world, and allows him to realise that his own cultural upbringing is more powerful, causing him to repatriate back into contemporary society. He is after all... a cop, and will always be a cop. (hence his name "book", the dude is by the book)
I'm not sure if this is what you were after since you just pasted a prompt out of nowhere and expected people to be able to read your mind

If it is, i'll add more to this later on
PS - this should be in the English/ESL section... why the hell is it in tuition lol
