Monash vs. Melbourne Commerce

Need a bit of advice. I've been tossing up between Commerce at Monash and Melbourne and I can't seem to make up my mind. I list the pros and cons for me in going to either.

                                           Pros                                                                                           Cons
Monash      $1000 cash received upfront if I join (Monash Prize)           Less prestigious/Lower ranking compared to Melbourne Uni
Only a 15 minute drive away
                             Can do Law concurrently

UniMelb      Have the Kwong Lee Dow Scholarship                                   Will have to take public transport (at least an hour)
Higher ranking compared to Monash                                                  Doesn't offer undergrad Law
Can do JD/MBA in the future

What do you guys reckon I should put first?

Thanks for your help in advance,

Sam  :D

Monash imo, mainly for the close distance and the ability to do a double degree with Law.

dude for monash its easier tog et a schoalrship than melbourne.... so in you could potentially earn $6k a year cia scholarship at monash. And dw prestige doesnt mean that much anything outside victoria. Some peeps might be biased in terms of name of uni you went to... but i think it goes both ways. I also forgot to mention that you have a gurantee to do law if u get in straight in monash whereas melboune u have to try again and you might not make it(not sayin you wont, but theres always a chance u might stuff up).... Im going with monash purely coz of the guranteed of doing law and the scholarship... name is not that important if you are workin in victoria (if u are working interstate/international then yes it might have a bigger significance)

I was in a similar situation with Commerce/Law attracting me to Monash, however I ultimately decided on Melbourne. I've been happy with this decision, as it allows me to get into the workforce quicker (three year verses five and a half), and for the accounting field, law is not really required (as in, employers will teach you what you need to know). Law degrees are in massive oversupply in Australia currently, and experience is king (in addition with professional qualifications, ie. CA). That being said, I plan to undertake post graduate law in the future.

Despite the fact that I'm biased towards Melbourne University, in your situation I'd go with Monash. Simply because of travel time. After you begin travelling over two hours a day, everyday it gets tiring REAL quick.

I go to Monash and it takes me an average 45 minutes a day to get there (worst has been 90 minutes to get there). People ask me how I can do that everyday and I usually reply saying that you get used to it. This semester though, I've gone into uni on days where I only went to 1 lecture and spent the rest of the time hanging out with friends. Going to Monash is a choice I won't regret. I've enjoyed a lot of the course content, made plenty of friends, and driving a fair distance everyday is the little bit of hardwork I put in such that I can get all that stuff

My orginial plan was to do the BComm/LLB double at Monash, but getting into the work force and getting experience is probably the better option. I'm definitely more attracted to the Commerce field, and I thought that doing a Law degree would be complementary. Post-grad Law is probably 'better' in a sense, compared to doing under-grad.

For your convenience, I have crossed out the things that don't matter for BComm.
I have also taken the liberty of adding a Monash con, and a corresponding UoM pro.

I'm not getting into the whole "employers don't care whether you're from UoM or Monash" discussion again... as a third year BComm student, just trust me on this one.
Also, you can do JD/MBA in the future regardless of which uni you attend.

And seriously, the KLD Scholarship is worth jack-all: http://www.futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/school/aust/kwongleedow/benefits.html
* "Upon enrolment at the University of Melbourne, Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars will be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) in the new generation degree of their choice.*"
-> All domestic students are offered CSP places; there is no longer such thing as a full-fee domestic uni student.
* "Young Scholars from regional Victoria and interstate can receive a $2,500 relocation allowance* to assist with the costs of settling in Melbourne to study at the University of Melbourne."
-> Are you a regional student? This is probably the only real benefit you stand to gain.
* "Students are eligible to receive a Melbourne Global Scholarship* to the value of $2,500 to study at one of over 140 partner institutions in 33 countries across the world on exchange or in an approved study abroad program.*"
-> Monash Abroad gives a $2500 grant to all students who go on exchange, so long as they don't get an exchange scholarship (which are worth considerably more).

The only real perk for KLDYS is a pretty little line on your resume that says "Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar (The University of Melbourne)". You can put this on your resume whether or not you actually go to UoM, since you're already a KLDYS either way.

KLD is just a program to get students to come to UoM, which is why they offer lower cutoffs. It means nothing once you start your degree.
The JD is available to any PG student, not just those from UoM.

Monash seems like your best bet, especially given that you live so close.

Yup, they do not care. At all my assessment days there were a decent mix of Melbourne and Monash students (I would say 60:40 relationship, although that may have been influenced by a range of factors).

How badly do you want to do law / are you actually planning to do something with it in future or is it just a "looks good on my resume" thing?

I hate how some people do courses simply for the sake of prestige. :|

OP: I'd choose Monash simply because its closer/easier to get to. Check which graduates employers prefer. If you really cant decide though, check where your friends etc are going (Look at other aspects such as social)

A university being closer/easier to get to is even a shitter reason than prestige imo. It shouldn't come into play unless you have to travel ridiculous amounts.

prestige shouldn't come into play at all as there is no difference between both unis for commerce

at least distance affects your will to go to uni ( shorter distance, more motivation to get up in the morning to go )
