Need a bit of advice. I've been tossing up between Commerce at Monash and Melbourne and I can't seem to make up my mind. I list the pros and cons for me in going to either.
Pros Cons
Monash $1000 cash received upfront if I join (Monash Prize) Less prestigious/Lower ranking compared to Melbourne Uni
Only a 15 minute drive away Menzies building and Rotunda
Can do Law concurrently
UniMelb Have the Kwong Lee Dow Scholarship Will have to take public transport (at least an hour)
Higher ranking compared to Monash Doesn't offer undergrad Law
Nice buildings and gardens
Can do JD/MBA in the future
What do you guys reckon I should put first?
Thanks for your help in advance,
Sam
For your convenience, I have crossed out the things that don't matter for BComm.
I have also taken the liberty of adding a Monash con, and a corresponding UoM pro.
I'm not getting into the whole "employers don't care whether you're from UoM or Monash" discussion again... as a third year BComm student, just trust me on this one.
Also, you can do JD/MBA in the future regardless of which uni you attend.
And seriously, the KLD Scholarship is worth jack-all:
http://www.futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/school/aust/kwongleedow/benefits.html*
"Upon enrolment at the University of Melbourne, Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars will be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) in the new generation degree of their choice.*"-> All domestic students are offered CSP places; there is no longer such thing as a full-fee domestic uni student.
*
"Young Scholars from regional Victoria and interstate can receive a $2,500 relocation allowance* to assist with the costs of settling in Melbourne to study at the University of Melbourne."-> Are you a regional student? This is probably the only real benefit you stand to gain.
*
"Students are eligible to receive a Melbourne Global Scholarship* to the value of $2,500 to study at one of over 140 partner institutions in 33 countries across the world on exchange or in an approved study abroad program.*"-> Monash Abroad gives a $2500 grant to
all students who go on exchange, so long as they don't get an exchange scholarship (which are worth considerably more).
The only real perk for KLDYS is a pretty little line on your resume that says "Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar (The University of Melbourne)". You can put this on your resume whether or not you actually go to UoM, since you're already a KLDYS either way.
