SAC Moderation...err wah?

I was just wondering...what exactly is it based on? Do classes with high SACs/low Exams get moderated down and vice versa? How much can VCAA mess around with SAC results?

Thanks

Its based on how your cohort performs.

Say you are ranked 5th in a cohort. that is the number that is important. It doesnt matter if you got an average of A+ or E+

Now after exams your SAC mark will be the 5th highest exam mark to come out of your cohort.

So to answer your question, yes.

If rank 1 in the class is high A+ in SACS but then then highest exam mark is a D then whatever you got through out the year is irrelevant.

Thanks now i get the point of SACs in terms of their contribution to the ATAR...

you could get an E+ in SACs and come last but if your class' lowest exam score is A+ then i would get the same SAC moderation as those who were ranked first in SACs??

Yes, that is correct.

EDIT: misread your question. The moderation would not be exactly the same, but quite close - within the A+ range.

woot!! this rocks :)

honestly though, in a psych class of 25... if you're ranked top 4 then you wouldn't really be at a big disadvantage compared to someone ranked number 1.. as the top 4 usually get similar exam scores...

OR in a class of 4 in a spesh class with only nerds... then why bother studying for SACs???

but what happens if you're ranked equal first?? becuz theres 4 people in my class that have gotten full marks in all ours SACs including me ;)

also what do people mean when they say if you goto a really smart school like Haileybury then you would get a better study score than going to a crap public school...?

Thanks

My guess is that Haileybury generally would perform better overall as a cohort, which in turn results in students' SAC marks being increased in comparison to a "crap" public school as you put, which may decrease because their school didn't perform well as a cohort.

In any case, it doesn't matter what school you attend. If your exam(s) results reflect what you've gotten for your SACs, then your SAC grade isn't moderated, I don't think. (i.e. if you got A+ on the exam(s) and your SAC marks were A+ then I don't think your SAC grade would change.)

Anyone feel free to correct me on this! =P

The school doesn't send in your SAC mark, essentially it's always moderated.

It's a ranking. They send the ranking of the cohort. It may be slightly different, but in principle, they match the highest exam mark with the person who has the highest sac ranking-the lowest exam mark with the person who has the lowest exam marking.

simple way to think about it.

your class has 5 people, people are listed in order of SAC rank
so
a=1
b=2
c=3
d=4
e=5

when you get exam results they are also ranked
c=A+
b=A
a=B+
e=C+
d=D

now a very crude example of what may happen is
the SAC marks change like this:

a=A+
b=A
c=B+
d=C+
e=D

now there is much more involved than this but this should help a little in getting and idea of the type of thing that happens

Let's not get carried away in the fairy land of moderation bringing up your sacs. If you're ranked last in your class, and you know there is one deadshit in your class who will not study for the exam, enjoy your E+ E+ A+ with a study score of 25.

Moderation only happens when there is a disparity in your whole cohorts SAC rankings (the sac rankings dont match up with your exam rankings), or if you go to a good school which gives out ridiculous SACS, and gets investigated every year. i.e. MHS/MacRob, which is why if you are in the big cohorts at either school (maths/science/accounting/english), you can afford to do poorly on your sacs.

What if everyone else's SAC rankings match up with exam results, but it's just your SAC ranking that does not match up with the exam result? For example, u get As for both of the SAC GAs, but for the exam u get B or C+ for some reason?
