“Though Cosi is a comedy, the real massgaes are deeply significant” discuss.
Cosi is a semiautobiographical play written by Louis Nowra in the 1970s. It is a play that captures the world of Cosi Fan Tutte, an opera written by Mozart. Cosi is a drama about an inexperienced director, Lewis, who chooses to gain experience in directing a play with mental patients from a Melbourne Institution. Through the farce and comedy of Cosi, there are controversial messages which are deeply significant to modern audiences. Nowra displays his opinion through his characters as they are placed in dilemmas and difficult situations throughout the plot of the play.
Cosi was written in the era when hippies began influencing Melbourne with its concept of free love. They taught that love was something to give everyone and rejected the idea of commitment and loyalty. Cosi condemns those who do not believe that relationships require fidelity and commitment. Lucy, Lewis’ girlfriend does not believes in free love which results in the breakdown of their relationship. Lucy claims that they are “not married” so it is acceptable to “have sex with” his friend and to “sleep with” him because they are different things. Lewis concludes that “as both [Nick and Lucy] were not into fidelity.” Nowra expresses his idea that partners who do not show their commitment to one another will not have long lasting relationships. He describes the significance of fidelity as an essential aspect in everyday relations.
