I never really notice when I get a PM as you have to actually look at my messages to see if you have got anything.

Maybe we should have something pop up saying that you've got a message? Or something to tell you you've got a message.

You can turn a pop up option as well saying you received 1 new message would you like to open it in a new window

Go to 'profile'
on the left click "Personal Message Options"

tick: Show a popup when you receive new messages
and "Notify by email every time you receive a personal message" put always

dude you didnt even contribute....


and,
that "pop-up" option doesnt really work when you link from vcenotes home-page to the forum (for some reason)
but it does pop up quite conveniently when you are browsing, so

=)

As they have direct database access, I don't see why not.

PMs cannot be hashed (unlike passwords, which can be hashed/encrypted and compared in their encrypted form) if they want to be read by a human.

Not from the forums, no. I think if I searched the appropriate table in the database with a manual query, I could. But I wouldn't really want to and there's also that whole invading people's privacy thing.
