How to find the range of this without using a calculator.

Hi guys

Was doing a practice exam and came across this question in Neap 2006 Exam 1.

What is the range of ?

I tried to guess and said [-8,10] but the answer is actually [-8,1]. Can someone please explain this?

need to realise that has values from , as squaring all negative values gives positive
hence has values from
+1 to everything ->

Dilation -> reflection -> translation in that order
