It wasn't too bad but what did people get for the meiosis question about what stage was 'n' at for this meiotic divison??
did you have to specify the exact phase
cause i just wrote stage 2 of meiosis
You were meant to write anaphase II

woop woop.. looks like i actually got one right :D :D

So I'm looking at about a 30, any chance of sneaking a 31/32 with my scores?

you will have to be really lucky with C+ B+ B last year I got 31 raw.

Could the birds fly?
Our native birds can fly and yet cats still eat them...

I'm not sure if youve had a cat or a dog but sometimes they bring in birds lol

if my pet (dog) can catch a bird the domestic dogs can prey on natives too

EDIT: there were only a small trace of birds in the same layer as the dogs so enough dogs were able chase off the small number of native birds right?

I reckon it was a reasonable enough answer, some native bird species are endangered this way i think...

We'll wait and see though

I think they were trying to indicate it could be multiple reasons by showing all these things in the fossil record

Also remember fossilisation is rare, so even if they didnt kill and eat all the native birds to extinction, if they were endangered it means less birds around=less chance of fossil

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral_cat

Can be more or less applied to dogs

the ash remains of plants or whatever are around when the bird numbers decreased and after, indicating around the time of the disappearance of the birds volcanic eruptions occurred indicating they were responsible for the potential extinction of the birds. or some shit.
but can't birds just escape from volcanic eruptions?
just fly away?

Im no volcanologist but not all volcanic eurrptions are sudden and violent like in movies, you could probably tell it was going to happen before it happpened.... So i think you make a fair point...
Then again the new islands exist by volcanic eurruptions... what if there was only one island... hawaii is in the middle of nowhere on the map.... but i assume the birds survived the volcano eruption on a singular island and could just fly to more once several islands were created... i dont think the islands are very far apart either

i wrote comparing the fins cox gene to the known species cox gene or something and that humans can use it to find out what if fish species are related :S

I noticed there are several things you could of done for the bird question:
*Domestic dog bones appeared roughly after the bird bones started disappearing, so the introduced dogs probably preyed on the native birds.... sort of like how stray cats here eat out native birds

*Pottery appeared the same time was the birds disappeared, pottery is indicative of human settlement so maybe they hunted the birds, this is the weakest choice though... doesnt really prove how long humans were there though, it just shows when pottery was invented

*The volcanic one could of also worked but i mean i think it had volcanic evidence in the lower layer also...

If the birds could fly (can't remember lol) then how would the dogs be able to catch them?

Could the birds fly?

i wrote about the dogs eating the birds too.. realising how stupid it sounds now it was logical at the time !

I said that the humans and domesticated dogs hunted the birds.. hahahahahahhaa..
and that the charred plants were due to fires that were used to cook the birds haahaha...
