Just wondering if somebody could let me know about the following questions:
* Change of normal chromosome I and normal chromosome 2 - I said 8/24 = 1/3 = 33%
* The stupid fish gene sequencing question.
* The centromere question
@ Translocation - why is he phenotypically normal?!

these are my responses and are by no means 100% correct

* Change of normal chromosome I and normal chromosome 2
there were four possible genotypes, N1 with N2, N1 with R2 (retarted 2), R1 with N2 and R1 with R2. therefore chance of both N1 and N2 is 1/4

* The stupid fish gene sequencing question
i cant remember qn u gtta be specific

* The centromere question
-mitosis can occur properly
-when the hybrid primate/man thing mates with another, it now has a homologous chromosome within which a fertile zygote can form

Translocation - why is he phenotypically normal?!
i said because all genetic material is conserved. no deletions/mutations ect.

-i agree with the chromosome 1 and 2 quesiton saying that its 1/4
-for the translocation question, i said that the genes are still existant in the karyotype thus he is still able to produyce the proteins required to make him 'normal' something along those lines.
-fisherman question was effed up, i just bullshitted
-was a tad confused with the jaws question, but conlcuded that the more parabolic jaw was the australopithecus

yea i said parabolic and smaller teeth, not sure if just saying small teeth will suffice for a mark....

I suck... I wrote 1/4 then crossed it out in pencil

that's better than what I wrote, originally I had 1/4 then I changed it to 1/8 :P

ahhh same man. i got 1/8...i thought there was a 1/4 chance that the two would align together...then a 50% of one of the gametes to have it..so 1/4 x 1/2 =_= but now people have seem to say its wrong :(

Meiosis question:

There are four possible types of gametes, with each one having an equal probability of occurring, and only one of them has a normal chromosome 1 and 2. Wished they gave you more lines though - i'm not sure whether I had to talk about independent assortment

Fusion of centromere qn:

I said that the fusion of the centromere caused instant speciation as the ancestor chromosomes and the "human" chromosome 2 are no longer homologous, and this was the point where the human line diverged from the chimpanzee line. What you guys reckon?

@onerealsmartass: That jaw question - I don't think they'll pay smaller teeth as the canines of Jaw (whichever one was Australopithecus) were smaller yet the molars were much larger :S

Nah i said that australopithecus (i was relating to the first jaw) had larger molars than the gorrila - just got my wording confused

And i wrote something along the lines of what you wrote for the centromere question :D - centromeres fused thus producing 1 chromosome from which the humans evolved from the common ancestor and the chimps evolvgin the other way... something like taht

Ahhhh even tho i know ive lost a few marks here and there i feel confident at the same time cos ive got a chance with those dodgy quesitons

lol hopefully we get paid

tbh i think those "dodgy" questions are good for us as they really tested our ability to think outside the box

which is why i think A+ won't be that high...i'm thinking 119-123/150
