Med vs Law

My parents want me to do med, but my teachers say that I should do law... I am equally good at the sciences and english, but maths is my speciality. What should I choose to aim for, i am really confused at the moment...

Pretty much everything you've said there is irrelevant. Real question is what do you actually enjoy more? There's no way you'll get through Med if you don't actually enjoy it.

If you're "sciences and english" and "maths is your speciality" why not do like, Science? And if, (don't know how your teachers think you should do law) you want to do law, take legal studies for a SLIGHT insight into what law MIGHT be like.
:D

In terms of aiming, aim to do your best. /cheezy line

Same deal with law.

I was in a similar position of being decent at both sciences and English. I took the coward's way out and chose Science/Law. [obviously there were other reasons too]

Well, in Monash it's possible to do both Med and law, as a double degree,  you get the best of both worlds :D But i don't think you'd want to do that though...

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

Ditto for law.

Legal Studies won't help you for Law, but it will let you know if you have any interest in it.
You haven't mentioned anything about your view - only that some teacher said you should do law and that your parents want you to do med.

However the fact that you are posting on this board means you are looking for something above the arbitrary 'do what you want.'

So here are some questions:

1. Obviously, what will you enjoy more?
2. What are you better at? English or science?
3. Do you even want to get in a profession like med or law? both are very difficult professions. Law is very competitive and, correct me if I'm wrong, med students are pretty much guaranteed jobs due to the fact there is a shortage of them, especially in the country.
4. Pay. I don't think either of these jobs pays well for the first couple of years, unlike things like dentistry which have amazing pay. Is this a problem for you?
5. Why have you restricted yourself to these two fields?
6. Are you aware you are not restricted to the subject you do in university? You can do med and change to law if thats what you feel you should do.

"My parents want me to do XYXYXY" - is no reason to take it. Same goes with your teachers telling you what to take. Do what you want to do. Not what others want you to do.

It will take some time for you to decide on the course YOU are interested in. takes most ppl ages - Stop worrying you have plenty of time to decide. Just digest over it and make a decision for yourself which isn't influenced by others. Like really? If we said do Med coz it pays heaps, you would have actually taken it? Also just think about the negatives as well as the positives for your course/ career ambition. You might not like the fact that your around sick ppl 24/7. Or that in Law you might end up working for some criminal.
Seriously listen to what Shinny, Ninwa and the others say. its 100% true.

DUDE DON'T LISTEN TO PEOPLE WHO SAY 'IF YOUR SPECIALTY IS MATHS THEN DO SCIENCES'.
Seriously.

My specialty is English/Literature/Comms and I'm trying to drop out of my course.
Because I hate doing it so much and I enjoyed science more but was good at this so went into it.  I still am good at it but it's the biggest pain.

Do what makes you happy - PLEASE.

Do you even want to do med or law or is it just because people are expecting you to or recommending it ?
Your reason for doing med is because someone told you to and so is you reason for law

Maybe consider doing... what you want to do? (revolutionary idea, i know)

I find it sad that so many clever people at the end of their degree are pressured to pick either med or law. Do what you actually like (it may not actually be med or law!)

If you like both arts and sciences, then maybe and Arts/Science double degree would be a good idea.

thanks for the advice everyone!

What I enjoy (academically) are maths (doing methods and spesh), science (especially chem), debating (DAV debater since yr9) and english (mainly persuasive writing). I also don't mind playing music (piano).

I have never liked geography, LOTEs or art as subjects and find some aspects of history interesting.

Keep in mind that doing something as a subject and as a career is much different though. I personally enjoyed Maths more than any other subject but I can't imagine doing a career in it.

fair enough. my favourite subject (of the ones I mentioned) would have to be chem (even though its not what I am best at)
