It can't segregate with the chromosome on the "same side" of the plate so to speak.

Fair enough with the centromere question, although I personally took this as an instant speciation (where human line diverged from chimpanzee line) question, hence the reason why I talked about the chromosomes being non-homologous and hence unable to synapse during meiosis - so hybrids possessing one copy of ancestral chromosomes A and B and one copy of the fused chromosome would be sterile, showing speciation

exactly my answer :) but being worth 2 marks i mentioned both a reference to mitosis and sterile-now-ok

Hey guys I was wondering if someone could predict my SS?

Exam 1: A+  [122]   (Cutoff for A+:118) [was so disapointed :(]

SACS: Rank 4 out of a strong cohort (A+)

Exam 2:    ??        (Assuming the cutoff for A+ is 124)

What would i need in Exam 2 to still get 45+
But i dont know..im scared S:

Ohhh...I don't think they'd pay that - as there is no evidence in fossil record to suggest volcanic eruption at the time of the birds' disappearance (there are no igneous rock layers which are characterised by no fossil presence)

I hope your answer is fine as that was my answer too :P

charred plant fossils with birds in the same layer seems like sufficient evidence to me...
volcano wiped out most of the birds, caused mutations in those that survived, and eventually the species became too small and non-viable to survive, leading to extinction.

the way nearly all the birds died in one massive rock stratum indicates to me that they were all killed at the same time by some environmental event or another.

and for the centromere question, I have a feeling they wanted you to be specific, and say that an inactivated centromere would not attach to spindle fibres, allowing for normal mitosis/meiosis to occur, reducing the chromosome number which was responsible for human evolution.

after all, what is the purpose of a centromere?

for the rock strata one, i think what your saying is right, but I also added that no rock strata movement had occurred which shifted rock layers.

and for northern population, yeah, I think both answers will be accepted, as long as you explained your reasoning.

but great work man.  need to really study for other boring stuff now :P

do you really think lava from the volcano will char plants? only fire does. lava disintegrates it. Hence, I doubt they'll allow it. But who knows, they might.

For the transcription question, do you think I'll lose a mark for not saying it happens on the template strand? >< i forgot it argh.

I would say 67-71 for a 45 SS, depending on how you score on the SACs after moderation

I never bothered to find out my rank, it's not like it'd make a difference or anything (except for english, because i was super competitive with the couple of other top students)

There is a high demand for "knowing one's rank" in Rohit's school - school sees that it can make a lot of money out of it :P

nah jks

its your right to know where youve come
