Is ANU ranked higher than Monash overall?

My english teacher told us and we were like wtf. Is it true?

I visited ANU once (my dad returned a library book that was like 20 yrs overdue) and its campus was deserted... Not like Monash.

Bear in mind that these rankings aren't the be all end all.  Different rankings measure and put emphasis on different things so this will change the rankings quite a bit.  That's why on the website that Jason put up has different types of rankings.

Don't pick your undergrad uni based solely on ranking

It is tempting to do so. I guess it depends on:
1. What field you are looking on getting into, for example, law and commerce being quite competitive domains like the 'prestige'
2. Your own competence. If you have the ability to pick and choose - good for you. You are able to assess each university; but just remember that even if the university is ranked highly, it may not be quite 'strong' in your area of interest.

Like everyone said, it depends on what area. ANU is definitely stronger partly because of it's particularly impressive graduate program, in nearly all areas. As far as undergraduate goes, ANU is still excellent at some areas, such as science, law, and economics. On the other hand, most Melbournians don't realise that Monash is universally ranked (according to all rankings that I have read) much lower than ANU, the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, and usually even UNSW. So just because it offers your degree doesn't Monash is actually that good (that being said, Monash certainly is as good as you as you can get for certain areas, such as applied/experimental maths).

And, it depends if you're okay for the move to perhaps a little less night life than Sydney and Melbourne.
