If we hadn't of done it in spec, i doubt i would have picked up on the similarity.
Pretty tough question for methods, although at least it doesn't have fluid of variable concentration flowing into it at a variable rate which has the peculiar need to have a known value for dh/dx.

Maybe spesh people have been more exposed to questions that require similar triangles? (I have no idea as I didn't do spesh lol )

My prediction for the % that got the 5 marks is ~20%...we shall see.

I say 10-12%, seeing the relationship requires some geometrical inspiration, given that it was totally unexpected.

Same here. I didn't sit there thinking "oh yes, we did this in year 10, I know what to do!!!?"
Simple logic and a knowledge of ratios should have gotten you through fine.

I dunno I think I only used similar triangles once or twice in Spesh, whereas I had to use them a lot in Methods to find h in terms of r for these cylinder/cone related rates of change qusetions.

Definitely, if you had done enough papers, then it would have come up, so most people should have seen this before

I have probably done 10 of each exam and i have never seen it before, however i wish i had because i spent 15 mins on it so i stuffed up other easy questions as i was rushed :S

From memory there was one of these similar triangles related rates questions in the DH book or at least one was discussed at the lecture last year for Methods.
