Print and web based media: promote physical activity in the form of brochures and booklets. They are available as recreational centres such as sporting clubs and leisure centres. An advantage of print based media is that it does not require access to internet or a computer which can sometimes be difficult for older people and those of non English speaking backgrounds.
Web based media has enormous potential to provide valuable information to individuals. Depending on their stage of change tailored material can be matched to a person place within the SOC model.
Counseling:
Health- Professional counseling
An individual consulting doctors or other health professionals that promotes physical activity at the individual level, one such program is the ‘Active script’ where a GP performs a 2 minute assessment on their patients and provides immediate feedback on physical activity levels.
Telephone based counseling can be used s a follow up to a GP visit can be used as an approach on its own. Technology has led to the development of automated telephone services. Unlike print media it does not require reading so it is beneficial to those of no English speaking backgrounds. \
Three cognitive strategies of PA behavioral change are:
Increasing knowledge: encourage the individual to read and think about PA.
Caring about the consequences to others: encourage the person to see how their inactivity is affecting those around them
Being aware of the risks: provide the message that being inactive is unhealthy
Behavioral strategies:
Substituting alternative: Encourage the individual to participate in physical activity when they are stressed, tires or unlikely to want to be P active.
Enlisting social support: Encourage individual to fin=d a family member or friend who is willing and able to p provide support.
Rewarding themselves: Encourage individual to praise themselves for being physically active
Reminding yourself; Teach the individual to use reminders to be active such as keeping comfortable shoes in the car
Population based strategies.
• Tailoring- meeting community needs
• Removing impediments- taking away reasons not to be physically active
• Introducing new resources and facilities- new sporting venues=s and age specific playgrounds
• Support from other programs- reducing crime in the area
• Opening hours- opening sporting venues before and after business hours.
Exam notes
• When overloading it can’t be more than 10 %. For instance if number of sets were 3 it is not possible to increase it to 4. However if you were initially doing 8 reps this can be increased to say 9.
• Be specific with short or long interval training.
