Help me decide whether to change course

Hi all,

I am currently enrolled in 1st year Computer Science at the University of Melbourne. Now, for many years I aimed to get into this course and when I got in I was extremely happy. However, after having nearly a semester of it I now realise that Melbourne Uni's computer science course is barely related to I.T itself.

For example, this semester I am only studying one I.T subject out of 4. I have already e-mailed the dean and stated my concerns, but I just don't understand why Melbourne's computer science course has to be this way? I have looked at both Swinburne and RMIT, and they allow students to study all I.T subjects in all three years. I will unfortunately not get this opportunity at all. I am really struggling with some of the subjects (Electronics for one, which I absolutely hate). In general, I dread going to uni and am seriously depressed.

Given I worked so hard for this course, I am confused as to whether I should transfer to either Swinburne or RMIT? I don't want to regret my decision, but I don't want to continue suffering for 3 years at Melbourne.

Thanks all.

You should speak to someone in the faculty who can give you guidance as to whether the rest of your course will be similar to what you are currently studying or if it will begin to be what you enjoy to do. If you aren't satisfied then look into other courses and see if they will deliver to you what you want out of Uni and if they do then trasfer

"However, people studying information technology reported markedly lower levels of satisfaction than in all other subjects surveyed."

I can tell you that the Melbourne Uni course is anecdotally considered to be very average compared to that of Swinburne, Monash and, hell, even RMIT.

I strongly suggest you make the move to Swinburne, as the course over there is much more aligned with industry (due to the connections they have via their IBL program).

Also, if you think things are not right (at Melbourne), they probably aren't...and probably won't be.
