Tips for 50 in VCD? [2011]

Hi, I'm looking to get 50 in VCD. I'm a good drawer, and I'm able to think creatively most of the time :)
From your experiences, what tips can you give me to do well in Viscom? Whats the easiest design / product to do for folios, which can let you think creatively while maintaining uniqueness?
Thanks!

Viscomm is not a hard subject. It's just time consuming.

My advice is that you finish all your 3 folios for Unit 3/4 as soon as possible. Trust me if you don't want to get raped.

The exam for 2011 unit 3/4 should be piss easy

Thanks. Do you have any idea when I should start generating ideas? ;)

Well if you're not busy. Finish generating ideas for the 3 folios before 2011 school starts. If not, at least finish research for 1 folio and know what you will do for the 2 folios in unit 3/4.

Try to cover most of the criteria. I lost an A+ for unit 4 because i forgot about materials. For materials, you can just add some fabrics, leaf, flower, types of paper, wood, scrap of metal or  w/e in research or whereever you want to get that out of the way.

Lastly, hope you're teacher is not an idiot like mine.

Okay. So if I stick to EVERY criteria, is there a high chance I'll get an A+ for my folios, if not a 50? Does the exam weight my final study score much? What do you think you'll get?

Eh me...I procrastinated...Probably between 35-39 Raw then scale 3 down

I got a B overall for Unit 3 (C+ on folio), A for Unit 4 and Guessing around a B to an A+ in the exam.

Well...you also need to produce an innovative and a nice quality folio, then that's a sure A+. That's why I told you to start early because you'll end up adding things :D

Yeah.. Well, I have a passion for VCD, I'm good at rendering / drawing + using my copics...
However I suck at photoshop, can't use it for shit.. Will that ruin my chances for a 50?
Is computer generation a big deal?
Also, was your folio good? (Like, did you put any effort which can be noticable by just looking at it?)
Thanks alot, this is helping me big time lol

It probably is, but it doesn't take much time to learn as long as you have extra time up your sleeves.

I couldn't use photoshop but I searched for tutorials in youtube and stuff.

VCD is an equally weighted subject. This means that your mark is essentially divided between unit 3 (33%), unit 4 (33%) and the exam (with slight adjustment to 34%). This means that you need to do well across the whole year.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Your folio should be based on the type of design area you're interested in. You'd enjoy doing your folio a lot more.

Get your research and ideas completed during the holidays even if they're just rough ideas. Set a strong design brief so you can carry that from unit 3 across to unit 4. Good folios explore materials, media and methods extensively. Render your ideas/drawings.

Photoshop is a good program. Illustrator is slightly better in terms of resolution. In design is awesome for layouts. SketchUp is well sought out for architectural designs. There are a range of programs out there that could be used so explore them. However, it might be better to stick to what you know best.

IN TERMS OF EXAM

Don't neglect the theory behind VCD:

There will always be theory questions on the exam and they are worth a lot of marks. Learn the style of questions and format a way of answering each question. This will guarantee you easy marks. I ended up losing an overall of 1 mark for all the theory questions when I did my exam. This is a massive advantage when you sit your exam as you can actually breeze through these questions very quickly and use your time for other questions (ie, higher mark questions). The VCD is pretty 'easy' but it tests your time management skills and many students fall short of time.

Last design question:

This question could be easily done in 8ish minutes~ even if it may have the most marks needed. It's more like a handy trick if you're pushed for time in the exam than anything else. All you have to do is design accordingly to what they list down for you and make sure you've added everything. This will ensure you marks even if you've done an average job at it.
I used some of my allocated time for this question to get some of the more technical questions such as isometric, orthogonal questions accurate.

dude, if u want a 50 in VCD, which was what i was going for this year, there is only one key secret.

design what u would LOVE to design, font be an absolute idiot like some noobs and design something that is 'easy'. u need passion to do your folio, motivation is the key to success in VCD, and u need to design something u love in order to be motivated enough to get full marks.

u need full marks across the whole year to get 50. sometimes full marks in ur coursework wont even be enough if u are part of a crappy cohort and u may have ur sac marks scaled down. ace your exam, u will need to get full marks on that.

wait, so if i'm part of a crappy cohort, is this bad?

i'm currently in year 11:
-got A's/A+'s in all my unit 1 work
-got all A+'s in unit 2 with all average all very high criterias + teachers comments saying my folios were fairly mature.

the people in my viscom classes aren't amazing, just average; their designs are slightly mediocre and a bit unrefined in style. is this going to ruin my chances in obtaining good folio marks and a good end of year exam result?

it will definitely lower your SAC marks, bust justly so. Everything VCAA does is not supposed to be unfair, ur sac marks will get scaled down moreso than in a strong cohort becos it is easier for u to get rank 1. once u get rank 1, ur sacs will be automatically very good irrespective of scaling.

the scaling of sacs is also more subject to your exam than your cohort, so in the end, ace the exam.

I'd imagine there would be people getting 50s provided that there are enough people enrolled in the subject. How popular is VCD?
