classical music (its not lame). I have Beethoven's 7th Symphony on repeat whilst studying. I'm normally a rock/rap kinda guy but this gets me in the groove...

Yeah I think classical music is meant to stimulate the brain or something. At the moment I've got Vivaldi's The Seasons, Goldberg variations, and Holst's The Planets on repeat.

On the point of Classical Music, the eminent child psychologist Dr. Michael Carr Greg (or whatever his name is) said that the most effective piece of music to study to (which was a clear winner) was Pachelbel's Canon.

The Seasons and Golberg Variations are baroque though, just in case you don't really like that type of music (after a hwile I eventually get tired of it). The Planets is awesome though.

I'd also really advise against baroque music because it's very busy. One major feature of baroque music is that it has multiple lines of melodic interest going at the same time, so it would be quite distracting.

Apparently, Gregorian chants are one of the best things to study to. I just can't remember why.

If I study to classical music (which I haven't done at all this year), I mainly listen to gentle, single-instrument pieces such as Chopin's preludes/nocturnes.

Pachelbel's Canon is supposed to be the most soothing. It's also one of the easiest to play

I happen to have the complete works of Beethoven, as played by Claudio Arrau on my iTunes.

Also, I occasionally play Miserere by Allegri, a late-Renaissance piece (particularity towards exams), which is pretty famous, and has a very interesting history behind it (you used to get ex-communicated from the Catholic Church for trying to transcribe it down). The first line, I feel happen to be pretty significant

Miserere mei, Deus: secundum magnam misericordiam tuam.

Which translates to

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness.

Music will help some people to study and hinder others, therefore it is important to consider what works for you. For example words will distract some people, but not others. Same with types of music - there is no type of music that is best for everyone.

Yes I know I have posted it elsewhere but I thought it was somewhat related to this thread
Music as relaxing and mentally stimulating for study sessions - in an odd way I think that this game would have a similar effect if you were to play it just before a study session or if you have a really low attention span intermittently. It is a oddly soothing and relaxing game.
