Latin what a joke of a mark up...!

I hate those subjects that merely require you to get 30 or even high 20's and you are guaranteed 40+ firstly it's only available to those schools that are wealthy enough to find a teacher who will teach a dead language, VCAA it's time to change.

the markup reflects the difficulty of the subject.

but lol @attempt to denigrate a language and private schools in one go

The whole point of scaling is to make things equal though, because from what I've heard from others, to get a 30 in Latin is just as hard as it is to get a 40 in any other subject. I wouldn't be so quick to judge before you've actually done the subject yourself.

I go to a public school which offers Latin...

I agree with Chavi, it is one of the most difficult subjects to do! I've been studying Latin for over 5 years now..

Apparently the highest Latin study score at our school EVER, was a 34 (which would go to 48 or thereabouts). We're up against all the private school kids.. argh.

on a side note - Latin is also taught at a few state schools. EDIT: refer to Cambridge's posts
and all languages are also highly scaled (and some are exclusively studied in only one or two schools). + you may as well mention Classical Greek which is also for all intents and purposes a 'dead language' - (and so was Hebrew 100 years ago).

I heard that no one has ever gotten a 50 in Latin because you require perfect scores on assessments for it.

If that's the case, then it is definitely difficult and thus is deserving of it's high scaling

The highest Latin score in the state last year was a 47 or something.

doesn't spesh scale by almost 10?
Would you be complaining if a subject you'd taken had scaled up so much?
How much more do latin teachers get paid?

also, latin's available to anyone who can study at the VSL (where i did it) via distance ed, and probably doesn't cost much for public school students.
otoh, I didn't find latin harder than my other subjects - i struggled with all of them! so i'm not sure it does deserve such a large markup.

lastly, isn't the scaling a VTAC thing, for entry to universities?
if that's so, then it's the universities who lend more weight to high-scaling subjects, not VCAA. if not, why do vcaa give you a raw score on your statement of results from VCAA and a scaled score for atar from VTAC?

It doesn't cost extra to do Latin... it's just treated like a normal subject as a part of normal subject fees.

Does Latin's mark-up include the 5 or so SS points that the govt gives to some LOTEs as an incentive?

Hahaha don't worry I'm not too worried just hate the fact that my friend does Latin and French two subjects that are quite substantially scaled and I was told not to do French merely because I was never really good at orals hahahah
Neway on a lighter note how do they justify scaling for instance this year will methods scale more or less

There are two complications to scaling.  First, the three mathematics studies are of graded difficulty and they are scaled to ensure
comparability within the mathematics group.  Secondly, languages other than English (LOTEs) have an adjustment of 5 points
upwards to their means after the initial but prior to the final scaling.  This LOTE adjustment was introduced at the request of the
Victorian Government to encourage the study of LOTEs
http://www.vtac.edu.au/pdf/publications/enterbook.pdf

so i guess the latin scaling does include it, since the vcaa doc doesn't say *some* LOTEs.
