I'm going to end up doing either Biomedicine or Science anyway depending on the ATAR. Not too fussy.

Yeah same process for both, consisting of some enter/gpa + umat/gamsat + interview. Evenly weighted i believe

Some unis have weird requirements or different weightings (UQ has no interview) but generally yeah.

I got around a 90 ATAR and I have access melbourne for going to an under-represented school. Think I'm safe to get in science?

Also, does anyone actually know what it does to go to an under-represented school? Does it lower the clearly in?

Under-repped schooles lowers the clearly in, so to speak, yes... i think :P With a 90 id say you're safe!

I HAVE a QUESTION and there is possibly a thread with this as it's topic but i am a bad searcher! maybe one of those mod people could merge me in the right direction ;)

Id like advice between choosing Melb Biomed, with an access scholarship and possibly schholarhip for residency, and Monash MBBS with an excellence and equity scholarship. If my intentions are to gain medical KNOWLEDGE to become a doctor and specialise when im older does anyone have any little tips which i could consider?

Erm if you want to be a doctor and you've got a place in the MBBS, why would you consider anything else? Biomed doesn't qualify you as a doctor at all

yeah Millerpede, biomedicine is a science degree, and MBBS is a medicine degree.. After biomedicine you must do post-grad medicine to be a doctor, whereas MBBS leads to your internship and beyond being a doctor.

its the thing as doing arts at melbourne rather then law at monash. arts doesnt get you to law, whereas law does .. obviously haha

Haha yes I'm aware of those things, but after biomedicine at melbourne you could do a doctor of medicine to become a doctor amongst a load of other stuff right? I was just curious as alot of people are telling me Melbourne is the way to go as it's 'better' at medicine related subjects and the extra three years doing a bachelor of biomed would be worthwhile. But i dont know. Thanks anyway.

Correct, but there are a lot of people who are going to graduate and not be able to get into postgraduate medicine. If you do, then I think that the three year undergraduate is worthwhile but if you don't then it was a terrible mistake to choose it over the MBBS (assuming you have the choice).

Basically, if you want to be a doctor and you have the option of MBBS at Monash then you should accept that offer, if and when you get it. If you choose biomedicine over MBBS that suggests that you don't want to do medicine but rather are more interested in research/general applications of science

Cool. Makes sense. Thanks Russ. Yes I've heard how competitive the GAMSAT etc is. You hit the nail on the head though, it really just boils down to me being undecided about med vs research and other options. I never thought id have this choice to make really but my 'dream' has always been med and I'm just second guessing myself because melb uni to me, is attractive. well passing my interview or not for mbbs will really be a decider. thanks.

if your dream is to get into med. do med if you can get in! don't second guess yourself. you will learn all the medical knowledge as well as gaining practical experience!

i can understand my situation may sound a bit stupid, 'I want to do medicine but I don't know if I want to do the monash mbbs' haha but theres just something about melbourne. however i agree truetears, it'd seem stupid to turn down the opportunity of mbbs (emphasis on the IF I GET IN part :P). Leaving it as my first pref.

I know what you mean, I was in a similar position when I finished year 12.

But at the end of the day, if you want to do medicine you need to accept the place in the med course, not the glorified science course
