I'm planning to go into Science at Melb Uni next year too, looking forward to submerging myself in the uni lifestyle whilst learning!

I like how a post about the uni lifestyle follows a post about protesting outside the state library!

I reckon we should just return to those days where students can study in universities for free. Free education, more students studying, more better educated in the society, better communities, better nation without slack-offs.

But I'm just dreaming.

Not to mention that it would blow an epic hole in government budgets each year, which I reckon could be distributed to better places.  At least we have it better than those who go to uni in the US - now THAT's expensive.

I reckon free university would just result in people sticking around in uni for longer, either just doing more degrees or not being so worried about flunking a subject anymore...probably a good thing that there is some financial responsibility attached to going to tertiary education.  For those who work hard at it and make use of their degree, it's still one of the best "investments" you can have (a much better return than most financial securities, that's for sure!)

I can see where this is all going, everyone has a point. I'm just thinking sometimes it could be difficult for many students who's wishing to attend university and may have the determination to study but doesn't have the opportunity to do so for whatever the reason may be, especially on financial terms. But it's a nice thing most unis nowadays have special entry schemes for cases like this.

Speaking of costs. How much does each subject cost you on average? so far most of science subjects so far cost around $500-$600. But I enrolled for Finance 1 for my breadth and it cost $900, by far the most i've ever had to pay for a single subject. Also it's usually my breadth that costs more.

It's because the government considers science a higher national priority than commerce and thus charges less.

The actual cost of the course shouldn't bother anyone, because you don't have to pay it back until you earn a pretty good income. The only reason people don't go to uni for financial reasons is because they can't afford to not work full time. It's the time that's costly more than the cost of university itself. Also, for some people, travel is a problem, or having to move out to go to uni. But making uni free wouldn't change that.

Ok, so I'm debating between biomed at unimelb and biomed at unsw. Both are equally good options, which makes it even harder to decide unfortunately. One thing I'm wondering about though is the unimelb biomed cohort. I've heard that the cohort is extremely competitive and some of the people are so determined to get into med that they cut themselves off socially and even take sneak peeks at other peoples lab reports for their own gain. I've HEARD..i dont know if it's true. Even if it is true I know its probably just a minority and most of the people are fine but I dont know...I dont want to be in that sort of environment.
It'd be much appreciated if anyone can offer some insight/advice. thanks :)

I think 40% of the biomed people who applied got into the MD for 2011.

Russ can confirm this.
