UPDATE: I told myself that I'd see how I did on the unit 2 exam to decide whether I should do physics next year or not. Physics ended up being my best exam... but it was a really easy exam, and the physics teachers at my school aren't great. Now I'm more indecisive than ever. Help?

Funkyducky, I was in a similar position to you regarding physics (choosing between that and eco: http://vcenotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,31355.0.html), I chose physics.

Maybe you found physics easy because you are good at it! If you think that you were only good because the exam was easy, you will remain indecisive. Physics teachers in my school are also terrible, but with a good textbook, good mind-set, good organisation and good help from places like VN, I would go with physics.

(btw I know someone who got 99.65 who was suffering clinical depression in year 12, and had lost complete self-confidence in themselves. A lack of self-belief does not mean failure).

Do you read? ANY subject requires self-confidence. I'm sorry if funkydunky's posts come with a tone lacking self confidence?...I stand by what I said. If you don't believe in yourself, drop it. As for your little anecdote, I never mentioned the word failure anywhere. Please read next time

You said it yourself kiddo. You need confidence to succeed. I reiterate; funkydunky doesn't seem to posses this. For the last time, ANY subject requires self-confidence, so yes I can post in this thread. You'll also find that the correct spelling is affect, not effect

@OP: Only you, and you alone can decide. Going off anecdotes off an MHS student is really not going to help you at all. Summon your own will and you'll be fine. I couldn't find the passion nor confidence for Physics so I dropped it for VET

I am addressing your statement (or your 'truth') here. This is completely wrong. If you lack self-confidence (and I did not get that impression from funkyducky), thats not an excuse to drop a subject (self-confidence does not mean poorly performing in a subject!).

An extreme version of what you are saying: if you lack self confidence in yourself in every way, then you should 'drop' life (ie. suicide)   <--- it is very extreme (and I don't agree with it), but it uses your same principle.

That is basically what you are saying, and it is very poor form and very poor advice to someone who is confused. Not cool.

Your extreme version is just sick, thats totally blowing what I said out of proportion. I'm sorry but due to the abundance of other subjects, if one lacks self-confidence why not drop it and pick up another subject? Just because you found some will for Physics doesn't mean funkyducky should take it up at all. A dose of reality is not going to hurt anyone - I stand by what I say - OP, summon the will and you'll be fine.

Just because you did badly one year doesn't mean you will the next as I did just average in year 10 Physics but year 11 everything just got easier with the same amount of study (None basically) and I really enjoy it now. You already enjoy the subject and the things you learnt in year 11 will be carried forward into year 12 and make year 12 easier even if you didn't get the marks in year 11.

My arguments for dropping it are that I HATEHATEHATE physics exams and tests and, like I already mentioned, it is my worst subject. My teacher teaches the concepts well (and the physics concepts are the part I love...I can spend hours watching physics docos/reading physics books) but it seems like when we get tests, I haven't learnt how to apply the knowledge that I've learnt.

OR maybe you're just not studying the right way for physics?
The bad thing about VCE is that it is heavily reliant on exams, your "ATAR", rote learning, learning how to answer questions correctly. Thats why people who are more brilliant in the outside world can often struggle with these dull topic tests.
OR have youve been slacking off with physics? If yes, i suggest you continue with physics but this time, give it your best.

I reckon it depends what you want physics for.

If you're interested in an ENTER - I would drop it.  There is little point stressing yourself out with an extra subject (which, as your worst subject, will probably not even make it into your top 6).  Specialist covers some of the same material (if you're interested in overlap to reinforce), but generally only the boring stuff and the spesh approach is a little different.  If you want to improve with physics questions, you need to practice practice practice practice!!  Heaps of questions kind of become the same after a while.

For the sake of broader learning, I would say physics is one of the rare subjects where VCE provides some good intuitive knowledge of concepts and is worthwhile doing.

If you want to do further physics study in university, I would definitely do VCE Physics since you get rushed a lot more through concepts in uni and good foundations are pretty vital.

Woah guys! Calm down. Firstly, I have no self-confidence issues; I'm perfectly confident that I could get >40 for physics. I know my own capabilities, thanks. It's more an issue of whether I should bother taking an excess subject that won't count toward my ATAR.
