Haha there you go - I think I read somewhere that after the airing of the shows, the traffic to the Australia.com website doubled.. so this shows that if Americans aren't already booking tickets, they're definitely contemplating/considering it. But also remember that the shows weren't just aired in the US. They were aired right around the world, which makes it all worthwhile IMO.

Yep, It was in the Age or Herald Sun today, 25/01/11. Since the airing of the shows Tourism Victoria has reported double the traffic, most of them new. In addition, it seems Sydney is being shunned for Melbourne :D

Also, I was planning to do Wikileaks for my oral. Basically I intend to support Wikileaks, but I'm unsure of what my topic should actually be. I plan of talking about freedom of speech, transparency, and journalism. Any ideas anyone?

So what about the Flood Tax?

It could be persuasive with anecdotes/pictures etc, but I'd rather protest AGAINST the tax, so it kinda counteracts eachother.
Any ideas?

Thats a good one too. Against you can talk about budget cuts instead of introducing taxes, or democracy = choice, you can't force people to donate into a cause they don't want to help or something, It is unfair to tax people whom are already struggling with their own financial burdens, even if it is a progressive tax.

I spose I could support it, just say that it's only only a couple of bucks a week, sacrifice 1 coffee that sorta thing, but I dunno if I'll have enough to do for 5 or so minutes

I'd say there's more negative to this issue.
All the government wants to do is fkn tax us from the mining tax to the carbon tax to the flood tax to the god-knows-what's-next tax.
They're just leeching money for their failures (Myki most obvious although that wasn't federal) and now they're using the flood as an excuse to get some money.
And it's 10 dollars a week for those over 200grand isnt it? (5 dollars for those over 100grand?)

Ok so here's my plan:

30sec: Start off with a slideshow of some devastating flood pics
30secs: introduce the flood + some stats, with a lead in to the tax issue
45sec - 1min: explain the details of the tax (ie cost for each salary)
2.0min: why we shouldnt have to pay
( - many have already donated
 - we are in surplus + have funds stored away
 - trying to restore their losses
 - people should have insurance)
30sec: closing statement

What do you think?

A bit iffy about the insurance part - some people were exempt from insurance policy due to finer print in the insurance contracts regarding flooding. Insurance wouldn't be a strong argument.

/yeah I spose, good point though, I wouldn't want someone to question it and then be left stumped by it!

Apart from that though?

As for the other stuff, the only other problem is that you shouldn't time every section of your presentation like that. Just write the presentation out, free flow, and go from there. Don't allocate seconds and minutes for it, as you'd inadvertently rush to the next section, very awkwardly, if you went over even 5 seconds for a section. Just write it out without any time constraints in mind (other than the thing being 5 minutes overall) and if the speech goes over by a significant amount when you rehearse it, then cut out what you gotta cut out. :P Hope this helps.

it was only a rough time limit, it was more for the amount of comment I wanted/needed and relevant content for my accompanying slideshow :)
