Not a solution (sorry). But I would love a 'Ransom' study guide as well!

From what I've heard unanimously from good students + teachers, you shouldn't rely on study guides at all, and if you are going to get one, save it for end of year study.

A guide hinders your ability to think deeply about the movie/book, and using their ideas will just have you regurgitating commonly used ideas.

I disagree with this a little bit, I reckon study guides and sites like sparknotes are a good place to start with analysis. If you need something to kickstart your reading of the text they're good. But you're right that if you rely on them too much then you won't be able to explore concepts.

I use them at the very start of the year (right after I have finished reading the book in the first instance) to get me going, but then never look at them again. And I reckon you can find information to equal and surpass most study guides on the interwebs anyway.

I believe in reading a book and then watching its movie (in that order), but would disagree with your stance on guides. My advice (from a couple of the perfect scorers of 2009 + a few teachers) is that guides are useful but should not be depended upon. The advice is that they should be used as a starting (not saved towards the end) for one's own complex thoughts (otherwise the regurgitation you mentioned will occur). In addition, they are particularly useful for people having genuine problems with a certain text.

I agree with your disagreement. I found that a study guide gave me some fresh new ideas (not the ones written in the guide but other ones from thinking about what the guide had written in it). Something else was just brainstorming ideas with friends and going deeper thinking why did this happen and then making up some bull about the causation of the event.

hi agree with chansthename about the 'fresh new ideas'. I think study guides provide fantastic opportunities for people to further enhance their learning. You might come across and idea that no one in class has discussed. It also really depends on how people approach study guides.....whether it's to try and gain some new knowledge.......or to plagiarise...lol

Study guides are awesome!!! It gives you the extra edge over your peers, and the deeper analysis most public teachers don't get around to.

Ransom is written in a storytelling manner...so some of the sentences are quite descriptive and it might take a while to understand and get into the pace of the book. If you've read the iliad by homer book 24 then you'll know that ransom is based on that book. Although you will realize that david malouf has introduced a new character called somax/idaues

Neap has a study guide out for ransom ... Costs about $15 I think

LoL, I sense something fishy between Fly Away Peter and Ransom. Don't tell me they are both written by Malouf.

I've forced myself to read Ransom from start to finish, and to be honest, it really starts to get into you after the 2nd half of the novella. The first time, it might be hazy, and I suggest reading some parts again where it gets descriptive or you might get lost. I've just finished reading it, and will definately read it again some time this holiday, though I do find the book quite a bit of a bore!
About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

Yea, i'm reading Ransom too. I was watching Troy a few times too.. I prefer Troy.

Though i must say, Malouf is the type of writer who likes to make readers reread. I picked up Ransom a second time and it was a more entertaining read.
