I see almost every Uni student with one. What exactly do they enable, just being able to quickly tap down what the lecturer says and for writing up assignments?

for Facebooking / playing spider solitaire during lectures

This.

+ make sure you realise that unlike a desktop, you cant have everything in a laptop

eg; with smaller size laptops (<13.3") you loose proccessing pwoer, so no games. but you gain battery life, portablity, lower weight etc.

about lectures, many unis nowadays upload auido files of the lectures, so you can just download them for reference when you get home, as opposed to rush typing during the lecture.

new macbooks are pretty solid buy. pretty powerful 7+ hrs battery life, light 2kg, and easy software to manage. (crap for gaming tho...)

Macs are generally too expensive for what you get.

If you need IT support, you're doing it wrong. :P

“We are all alone, born alone, die alone, we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely -- at least, not all the time -- but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.”

- Intuitive? Great when learning, then what?
- Apple have some of the worst support I've faced unless you walk into the genius store. Linux and Windows have so much support and flexibility.
- Build quality build smahlity, they are mainly all the same parts and I'm pretty sure it's like one company in Thailand that makes them all.

If you are into graphic design/hipster couture/shiny stuff then Macs are great, but for less money a windows/Linux system can do the same thing for most circumstances.

I hardly doubt we want Mac V Windows V Linux debate though.

standard.

before this goes off topic, I'll just say that for the things that the OP needs from their computer, Macs are just not necessary, a simple EeePC or MSI would be fine. However, if they really want a Mac, but a netbook, I recommend the Dell Mini 10V, then this:

Yes of course. Saves your parents and siblings annoying you about the use of the communal desktop computer.

Laptop for sure! It'll be more convenient, considering you might need to study in a library somewhere in uni or other places. No way I would study at home, it's like an Asian supermarket 24/7.
