Getting Ahead...
« on: December 06, 2010, 08:04:44 am »

Hey everyone....

I have read through a few posts/topics and other forums and seen that people mention gettin ahead or completing the course before holidays and so on...
My question is when you go ahead how far? For example over these holidays would you just prepare for AOS1 or write notes for the whole year?

And when you complete a course, is that so in class you just revise it or more so that you have a basic understanding of what you will be learning?
Hope that all made sense
Thanks

To start off, I think it depends on the subject. For subjects like Methods, Chemistry etc you should try and finish the course before school starts again - do the exercises and make notes. This is so that once you get back to school, you're ahead and it saves you time. Your teachers will go over the course material and this reinforces what you've learnt before (in the holidays) - consolidates your knowledge.

For "ROTE-learned" subjects like Legal Studies, I've just been writing summary notes of each AOS. For English, I'd just read all your texts for next year. I think to answer your question, it's both - to revise what you've learnt over the break and to get a deeper understanding - ask your teacher if you're unsure of anything.

+1 My purpose of learning the course during the summer hols is so that what we do it in class is mainly revision and reinforcing what i already know
As EPL said for rote learned subjects you should just write summary notes

In hindsight, I could have done the whole BM course in a week. But it wouldn't have made any difference on my scores.

i will firstly type up notes, as i think it gets all the ideas into my head butthenn  i will handwrite.  i have found that by handwriting them out as well, i tend to read them aloud before i write it, then write it and then re read it again which helps cement it in.

Handwrite your notes. Typing can be done after, but you should handwrite them at least once.

“We are all alone, born alone, die alone, we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely -- at least, not all the time -- but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.”

what do you mean?

The business management course is very short and looking back at how I used my holidays, I could have finished the whole course very easily, as a yr 11. But my scores for SACs don't reflect a real need for it, at least for me.

Also, it should be handwrite then type, not the other way.

My plan is to complete AOS1 of each of my subjects, read all my lit+english books (there is a shitload of books) then just push on as far beyond that as I can. For all my subjects I'm just gonna sumarise the textbook in my own words and do the exercises in the textbooks relating to each topic i larn and make sure I understand every topic/concept before I move onto the next one on the list... Quite simple realy.

Definitely could cover the Bus Man Course over the summer holidays, then learn the finer details in class etc throughout the year.

In terms of PE ben_ess12, I would probably cover AOS1 in the holidays (NPAG, ecological model or whatever it is etc etc) but leave the next AOS (energy systems) until you do it in class, as it is the most important area of the course. All or most of of Unit 4 relates specifically to energy systems, hence ideally 75% of the exam will be on such concepts and related ones. So I would wait for your teacher to take you through it.
