I think its one step further.
Bachelor->Honours->Masters->PHD

The difference is that an honours degree is referring to a university degree that is of a higher standard or more specialised than a general degree.

i.e. General Degree: B.A, B.Sc., B.Com etc, whereas... Honours Degree: B.A (Hons), B.Sc. (Hons), B.Com (Hons)

Internet.

Does that mean it would be 'harder' to get into that degree?

An honours year is one tacked onto the end of your degree. If you achieve high enough marks during your degree, you can complete the (example) 4th year in a biomed degree and you get BBiomedSc(Hons). After that you can do PhD etc

If you're trying to go for a post grad, say medicine for example and you don't get in... are you really gonna sit around for 1 year doing nothing? you do an honours year and reapply the next year. Rumour has it that one with honours has a better chance of getting in. Don't quote me on this though.

Oh and also if your GPA looks like monkey balls because you screwed up in first year, do an honours year to bring it up. Not sure how it's weighted though.

But mainly those aiming for research generally do an honours

well thats one reason i want to do it

yeah ive heard that too 99.95 maybe cause its easier to get a higher gpa...with hard work of course but i have a gut feeling its hard to get <70 in honours unless you really bum out

if you want to do research then yep you pretty much have to do honours especially here in australia, everything is so super competitive and if u want one day to start your own lab then u gotta do phd but before that you must do honours (or masters instead depending...)
