Arts -> Arts/Law Transfer in 2nd Year?
« on: December 12, 2010, 09:12:16 am »

I'm kinda preparing myself to not have the required ATAR to get into Arts/Law (I think I'll be very close but I doubt it'll be high enough).

What are the chances of doing Arts for a year and transferring internally into Arts/Law in the second year? Is it likely to happen? What sort of average would I need throughout the year to qualify?

Thanks :)

To be safe, 80+ average. Although I have heard of averages between 73 and 78 having been required in the past.

So if you're above 80% an an average, you'd be pretty safe?

I've just heard that they take an extremely low number of students from internal transfers for Law, so I wasn't sure...

if you're above 80% your are completely safe. that said, in arts i hear this is surprisingly difficult. i would think that about 70 or above should get you in, as said above...

If you don't have a natural aptitude for English/Humanities 80% can be pretty hard.

yeah arts is pretty much the hardest course to score high imo due to (i think) not there being precise answers u can study for :(
but yes 80% for any course would do it

My forte is Arts based subjects (I've scored 100% internally for every English/Humanities subject I've done over the last two years), so hopefully I should be ok. I have a friend at UoM who is probably similar to me in ability and his average is 94% for his Arts degree, so I'm hoping I can do the same.

94% average mark in arts would be close to the best in the university.

The Arts faculty at Melbourne is far more generous when it comes to awarding high marks, or so I've been told by my politics lecturer who has taught at both unis. I read somewhere that out of everybody who did the first-year INT1010 unit in 2008 at Monash (which had roughly 1000 enrollments), only 12 people got 90+. I can't remember my source exactly and can't say if this is true, but I'd say it's about right based on my own and other people's experiences with the Arts faculty at Monash.

I know that Monash is very much reducing the number of internal transfers - it is extremely competitive to get in. But still a possibility.
What you should know however is that they are literally taking 1 or 2 external transfers now.

That'd be correct, 12 might even be a generous number.

I'm also pretty sure (from my schools career bulletin) that they eliminated more or less external (people trying to transfer in who are currently at a uni other than monash) transfers into monash law or the numbers are extremely tiny.

So it seems theyre pretty much grasping straws transfer wise, i'd aim for a high GPA just to be sure.
