Biggest surprise? Without question, my 50 in Physics.
The Finnish word pilkunnussija, which translates literally to “comma fucker,” is someone who risks his social wellbeing to annoyingly and persistently point out punctuation errors.

Completed VCE in 2010 - Now doing BSc at UoM

Thought I would have got higher although had a few surprises:
PE: A+ A+ A got me 40 Raw. Was aiming for a mid 40.
Further: A A A after a few terrible SACs I was expecting a 35 or lower ended up getting 38 raw so im happy.

Just a question is it best to look at the raw scores for how well you did?
ATAR 2010: 84.70

Physical Education: 40
Further Maths: 38
Economics: 36
Design & Technology: 35
English: 34
Visual Communication and Design: 34

Well if the score scales down, then look at your raw score to make you feel better. Otherwise, look at your scaled score.

For example, someone might be really disappointed with a 37 raw in Methods. But once they see that it's scaled to 43/44, they'd be much happier with the score!

Raw scores give you an idea of how you went statistically in comparison to the rest of the people taking that subject. Scaled scores, on the other hand, give you an idea of how you went in a subject compared to the statewide cohort across all subjects. It's a good idea to keep in mind that a 40 in specialist maths is the same as a 47 or so in English because specialist maths is more competitive.

So a 30 in Latin is as difficult as a 47 in English? (a 30 scales to 47)

I'm shitting myself now...........................

^ Different subjects are difficult for different reasons. One of my friends who got 99.95 and who's a whiz at latin scored mid/high 30s (she's brilliant - she was also at the olympiad summer school). Another person I know of scored 99.90 a few years ago with low 30s. Some of my olympiad friends who scored ~99 obtained mid 20s. I'd say that my 47 in French would have been much harder to obtain than my 50 in physics, but I also know that other people would've found a 50 in French easier than a 47 in physics, despite the more competitive nature of French.

Given the nature of students doing Latin, in theory I think it's just as hard to get 30 in Latin as it would be to get 45+ in any other subject. I have a friend who is doing Latin next year (same as me), this year he got 50 for both Methods and Accounting.

As appianway said, different subjects are difficult for different reasons. Latin's not really conceptually hard, it's the fact that students doing it are very bright - which makes it harder to score well. No student in the state can get 50 for Latin (raw or scaled), since there are not enough students in the state who do it to get the proper "bell curve".

EDIT: The +17 increase illustrates that getting 30 is in no way easy - even getting mid 30's for Latin is very good. Anything above 40 raw for a LOTE like Latin is incredible - hence, you don't see that many names for Latin in the newspaper.

If want a score in any subject, you have to work hard and put in the effort. I myself haven't started any Aeneid I, but I plan to soon. xD

That is very true, some people are geniuses at maths so they will get a high score which will be scaled up even further. Whereas someone who is good at humanities will get a high score and it will be downscaled more then likely.

further, im starting to think the one mark a study score theory is incorrect

same here. definitely not correct for me this year :\

worked for me. one mark on exam 1 is worth slightly more than a mark on exam 2 though.

i lost 2 on exam 1, and 3 for exam 2 (went through with teacher)
my results showed A+, A+, A+ and got only 43.
so.........

That's really weird because i lost 4 or 5 on exam 1 and then maybe another 4 or 5 on exam 2 and i got 43 as well...
Could it be because i had awesome sac marks and my cohort for further is really strong?

I thought there was a +5 rule for all languages to give people an incentive to do them, then whatever further scaling occurred was on account of the difficulty/competition within the subject.

Either way, getting 30 in Latin next year is going to be quite a struggle.

I swear my specialist and IT scores got swapped around some how. I studied constantly for spesh and screwed up the first exam to get a 41, yet I didn't study at all for IT and somehow managed a 47... :S

I feel really bad about the IT score as I don't deserve it, but as it turns out scaling killed it anyway and it wasn't one of my top 6, I still hate that IT was my highest (raw) score this year though....
Specialist [41], Methods [42], English [44], Chemistry [45], Physics [46], IT Applications [47], Further [48]
2010 ATAR: 99.45, congrats to the VCENotes class of 2010 :)
2011: Commerce/Engineering@Monash. Keen to tutor VCE students next year in any of the above subjects except English and IT, feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions relating to those subjects, probably won't be on this site often now, but PMs go to my email.
