Guys, take this advice from a hardcore maths junkie and former english hater. As much as english sucks and has parts that are dodgey (i'm not fully converted into a eng lover yet, and esp not a vce english course lover) the ability to write a cohesive essay is remarkably important. Sure, i know most of us will never have to know about the underlying themes and symbols in the books we read in everyday life, but the ability to write properly is so important. I know i for one was frankly a pretty shite speller, and i know i still struggle, but the important of English in vce forced me to start actually taking care in everything i wrote. Hey, better that i lose a few marks on a practice essay because of a spelling then losing a job becasue i've got spelling errors in my resume (it happens more often than you think).
At the start i also hated English and hated how it was compulsory, but it does teach necessary skills to surviving and suceeding in society. Don't get me wrong i also think that like tan said, maths should also be compulsory because in the same way, while advanced calculus is not applicable to everyday life, the way maths teaches us to think IS important to our development.
The indirect effects of math and english are vital to becoming sucessful
Like andewpolopol said, brainwash yourself to love english, i'm not even joking, i have a friend who hated maths but to make himself work he would get me to tell him every day for two months leading up to the exam that he "loved maths". Work for english and you will find you do get better marks. The more you work, the more you succeed and the more motivated you become to do English, it's the snowball effect.
