Actually, there is a provision for an oral assessment task in two of the three outcomes in unit three which could be 17.5% of all assessment or 35% of all SACs.

And of course, there are difficulties associated with the logistics of testing spoken English in an examination conducted by VCAA. I think the study design is really fair.

I must admit that even if you hate English, you should try hard in it. If I went back into year 12, I would definitely try this time. I got pretty decent marks in my other 4 subjects, but if I tried and got say 37, then I would have got something in the low 90's.

English was good for a few reasons
1. I like humanities
2. My best mark
3. For straight humanities students in VCE, English is a leveller - even if you get the same marks as someone doing sciences, they still get the massive mark ups whereas most humanities 1 or 2 at most (except for languages) hence I ended up with a decent enter

But the course is pretty dodgy - but nevertheless English is important as all courses are in English and thus require a standard to be prepared for them and it is important to actually be able to express yourself in written english for resumes/cover-letters for jobs and spoken english so you can actually express yourself.

The whole subject is dodgy, so subjective. Nonetheless, written communication skills are a necessity in most occupations, regardless of being able to identify themes etc within a set text.

English would be a good subject, except this is the VCE and it's all about beating the person sitting next to you.
Having said that, if you really enjoy studying English or any of the alternatives (for instance, I really like English Language), it should hopefully be reflected in your score.

As for English being in the top 4, I only agree with it because of the fact that the VCE allows us to do any English, and science-minded people who are proficient at written communication but are not humanities-minded can take up English Language, which is more suited to the science-minded.

The problem with English not being in the top 4 is that people need to be proficient in the use of Standard English in order to go through life. Standards of English are not pleasant; Monash University has recently resorted to conducting courses in simple written expression (namely correct grammar, punctuation and spelling) for first-year university students. The fact the VCE is about competition makes English being in the top 4 a necessity, as competition is the main motivator for one to improve in a subject here. Removing English from the top 4 sends students the wrong message - that profiency in Standard English is not a priority. Weaker English students would not be motivated to improve their written expression during school, and would be hung out to dry once they enter uni and/or the workforce.

see i think what should happen is that English should not be a compulsory top four, but it should be a higher prerequisite for uni degrees, it means that people will try more for English because otherwise they won't get into the degree they want, yet it does not overly disadvantage the more mathmatically/sciece-minded students

Andrew speaks nothing but the truth.
2011 - English, English Language, Philosophy, Indonesian SL, Outdoor and Environmental Studies.

“We are all alone, born alone, die alone, we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely -- at least, not all the time -- but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.”

The problem with English - at least for maths/science people like myself - is that it's such a dull subject to study for, and yet it is everyone's most important subject (it has to be in the primary 4)

I put in more effort than almost all of the people in my class (i went to a public school that gets very average results academically, maybe coz we don't have a uniform and that ingrains laziness in us...) however it was definitely the subject I had the most difficulty summoning motivation for. However I still did decently.

Maybe I would've been better suited to Eng Lang - but they're only introducing it for Year 12s at my school next year apparently  :-\

The Finnish word pilkunnussija, which translates literally to “comma fucker,” is someone who risks his social wellbeing to annoyingly and persistently point out punctuation errors.

Completed VCE in 2010 - Now doing BSc at UoM
