I think the cto is making a script to have all profile changes updated simultaneously. If not I'll have to change them all manually but hopefully not

Those affected - can you check if the problem extends to the other state forums or just the national one

The other states water coolers do not link to the national one.  They still seem to have their own. :S

The *only* viable solution at the moment to having the profile information available to each forum is to have a script that runs every night at a predetermined time (e.g. midnight) to synchronize all of the databases.

Or to just have each state school system as a subforum, with the links (vce.atarnotes.com etc.) going to the specific subforums and the national forum being the main page. Instead of having them all separate, seems like all the features that will require a complete rewrite of code could be easily avoided by just having the separate boards as subforums.

Probably too late for that...

sounds like a good idea under the circumstances

I also think this is a decent solution.  :)

Edit: How would the main database be kept though?

Like if it were based off on VN, then members from other states wouldn't get updated.

Not sure if it has been put up (mode/admins delete this post if it has), but is it possible to show in the victorian directed water cooler links if a new post is up (you know, by the bolding of a child-board's name, eg. Sport). That would help to just know if a desired topic as been posted in or not.

EDIT: One more thing, all the polls of moved topics (from the VIC Water Cooler to the National forum) have disappeared...

Why not just hide the child boards on the front page? So the national forum would look exactly like it does (child boards hidden) then when you click on VCE Notes it'll take you to a subforum instead of a redirect. Then on signup they choose what system they are in and based on that you work out permissions etc.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2137 <-- that would even do it all for you

'fraid not...
Mr CTO, is there any way to have the same Water Cooler in every state site as well as the national one, and have them all update simultaneously when someone makes a post?

I can tell you as CEO that this is impossible for the near future and we have already looked into it and doing this would be a -massive- undertaking and we'd have to rewrite SMF's code...

I like the subforum idea. It might encourage people from other states to post. Right now it looks like a new, empty site for other states, which I wouldn't post on either.

Someone (GerrySly) said you could make it so that on sign up, once you indicated which state you were from, the boards from other states would automatically be hidden: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2131 - which removes the "clutter" problem

edit: sorry, it was GerrySly who linked it

I really like the subforum idea.  I know enwiabe, you are against it... but please reconsider.  It would do away with all these integration issues, and lack of post updates for certain forums etc.  And also, if it is one forum, the other states will look busier, and it will encourage more people to post.  Moreover, if you can just hide certain boards, then the clutter problem will be minimised.

And when SMF 2.0 comes out, won't it be a pain to upgrade if everything is separate?

It's not as separate as you think. It's only one set of files. However, it's already nearly impossible to upgrade given how much we've hacked it. :p

Subforum will probably also look very cluttered - to quote enwiabe, "imagine the whole of VN squeezed under maths/sci/tech"
