Advice on course regarding engineering

Hey guys, I'm in a dilemma.

With my ATAR, I can do Aerospace/science at Monash but I can also do Science @ melbourne then do the masters of engineering (in which i will probably do electrical).

The only disadvantage with monash is that its far and I'm not very sure about the job prospects of aerospace in Australia. And for Melbourne, its closer but also I'm not sure about if employers prefer engineers from Monash.

I would like to hear your guy's opinion thanks!

I don't think degrees from melbourne are better than degrees from monash... they are both top notch!
Only think you would take that into account if you were comparing UoM to University of wagga wagga
I'd say melbourne if you value travel time over graduating sooner at monash.

I forgot to also add that they are both 5 years, but I can also do the single degree (aerospace) which is only 4 years.

If same length, go for the shortest distance. If you wanna make some $$$ earlier, ditch the science and go aeroeng @ monash :P

Yeah... Then there really isn't much different.

I would then go for Melbourne.
location is more convenient.
The word 'masters' looks better than 'bachelors' (I wonder where they got the names from in the first place).
guaranteed CSP into masters if you get over 65% gpa.

In the end I based my uni selection on the quality of the course and individual subjects. Melbourne uni is much more convenient for me to get to, but in comparison Monash is much better for my course. Firstly Monash has the double degrees, and I really wanted to do science so I could do more maths and chemistry plus be able to do Chemical Engineering as well. Monash also doesn't have compulsory breadth subjects which was a big factor into my decision. If you're going to go to UoM, would you be okay doing 4 breadth subjects or would you rather those be science or engineering subjects?

UoM also doesn't have Aerospace engineering. If that is your preferred area of engineering, then do the Monash course, and if you don't like it, you can go straight into other streams such as electrical or mechanical. The common year at UoM is all bull. You only do 2 engineering subjects in 1st year whilst at Monash you do 4-5 engineering subjects which specialise in all different areas of engineering.

Thing with UoM's "Masters" degree is that the subjects are identical to their single bachelor's degree and thus it isn't actually a Masters degree. That way you just end up wasting an extra year studying for no reason at all. At least with Monash, by the end of the 5 years you'll have 2 actual degrees.

As with location, it takes me anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to get to Monash each day. A lot of people ask me why I do it, and I tell them it's worth it for my course. Plus you just get used to it over time and the long drive stops worrying you especially when you find good radio stations to listen to.

jimmy999, your advice was very insightful and looks like I'll be going Monash :D.

Also one last question, is it hard to meet new people in the engineering department *cough girls LOL cough*?

In your position, I would probably pick Melbourne, mostly for the opportunity to study breadth subjects from the ARts faculty. But if you'd rather just stick to subjects relevant to your potential career, and if you prefer aerospace, go with Monash.

Yes but Monash actually has the most even boy to girl ratio for engineering. Roughly 20% of engineering students are females hence it's your best chance. However it's not that difficult to make friends with girls, my engineering group for semester one assignments had 1 girl and 2 guys in it. Most people are friendly in engineering. Plus there are many international students in engineering and they're always looking to make friends
